World Cup 2010 - Mikel out of World Cup

Nigeria's leading player John Obi Mikel was ruled out of the World Cup in South Africa, joining a lengthening big-name casualty list with a severely bruised ankle.

He picked it up on his first day back in full training following a separate knee injury, a week before the month-long tournament kicks off on Friday.

The 23-year-old joins Ghana's Michael Essien (knee injury) and very probably the Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba (broken bone near elbow) on the sidelines, leaving the finals likely to miss three of its biggest African names.

That trio all play together at club level for Chelsea, and they have also seen team-mates Michael Ballack and Jose Bosingwa ruled out of the tournament through injury for Germany and Portugal respectively.

Mikel learned on Saturday that he would miss this month's showpiece (June 11-July 11) after a scan showed he would not recover in time.

Nigerian Football Federation spokesman Idah Peterside said Nigeria's key midfielder had pulled up after some 50 minutes of training in Richards Bay on Friday with severe pain.

"He had been complaining about a niggle in the ankle when we first arrived in South Africa but after training yesterday it really flared up. His knee was doing fine and you can understand he is devastated about this new problem.

"He is not sure how it happened. It wasn't a tackle with another player or anything like that," Peterside said.

"It was been very emotional for him and for the other players too. The team has been trying to consol him. He's been to the Olympics but this was to be his first World Cup."

Mikel will return to London for further medical examinations at the weekend, the spokesman added. Nigeria's team were flying on Saturday from their coastal base camp to Johannesburg, where they play a friendly against North Korea on Sunday.

Mikel, who has scored twice in 30 appearances for his country, is being replaced by the uncapped Brown Ideye, a striker from French club Sochaux, the NFF said.

On Friday, England's captain Rio Ferdinand also joined a lengthening casualty list with a knee ligaments injury which rules him out of the tournament too.

  3. as far as i am concerned, i am a nigerian and i will not in any way have pity on mikel for not representing nigeria in world cup. however, i can only feel for him as a human being. mikel have never shown we nigerian that he really loves to play for the national team. he can be good for chelsea but he is one of the nigerian laziest player. mikel you deserved not to be in the world cup. wish you all the best get on well and get ready for the epl.

  13. I am quite surprised that Peterside says Mikel has been to the Olympics. Mikel played in the World Youth Champinships in 2005. He was not part of the team that Siasia took to Beijing Olympics in 2008. Peterside is the spokesman for the NFF. It only shows the level of incompetence. It should also be noted that apart from the final qualifying game against Kenya, in which Mikel played a huge role, his influence in the midfield playing for Nigeria has been very minimal.
I think his absence creates the room for options for the bench. It could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I want to see the likes of Sani Kaita, Brown Ideye and especially Haruna Lukman step up and prove what they can do.
I know all the favor Argentina to win in their first game but the beauty of football lies in the fact that in 90 minutes anything is possible. I tip Nigeria to go as far as the quarter finals alongside Ivory Coast and Ghana. I think Holland or Mexico may be the surprise team of the tournament.

Mikel excluded himself in a smart way because he knows that the team is weak and aint going no where.
The year has been good for him in Chelsea. Guess what , he doesn`t wanna spoil the joy of 2010..

  15. Fellow Nigerians please nobody should feel bad because of Mikel absence from the squad,he being absence means he is not our savior,if he is,nothing will make him not to be there for us so lets all pray for the once who have sacrificed to fight for 9ja.

MY ONLY ADVISE GOES TO LAGERBACK,HE SHOULD KNOW HOW TO PAIR OUR PLAYERS,THIS HAS BEEN THEN ONLY PROBLEM THAT THE SUPPER EAGLE HAVE BEEN SUFFERING SINCE BONFREY JOE AND WESTERHOF LEFT THE TEAM,NIGERIA HAS THE QUALITY OF PLAYERS THAT CAN BEAT ANY TEAM IF THEY PLAYERS ARE PAIRED ACCORDINGLY.THE ABILITY OF THE COACH TO UNDERSTAND HOW HIS PLAYERS PLAY AND TO KNOW WHO AND WHO HE SHOULD PLAY AT THE SAME TIME FOR BETTER RESULT AND HE SHOULD PLEASE PLAY KANU AT THE SAME POSITION SHAIBU AMUDU PLAYED HIM IN THE ANGOLA NATIONS CUP THIRD PLACE MATCH AGAINST ALGERIA.IF YOU CAN RECALL BACK TO THAT MATCH YOU WILL UNDERSTAND MY POINT . NOTHING DEY HAPPEN. ARGENTINA MUST GO DOWN.

    DOZMAN.

  16. @ redgeoff: You've got a point there. But the World Cup is a people's tournament. The world's game can't afford not to have a World Cup every 4 years (that's a long time). Club football and world football are both valued to the game and football lovers.

@ King Solomon: A (Winter) break only would not help. The main thing is reducing the matches players have to play in a season. It's just unsustainable! Too many games, too much travel, too much pressure, lot of training, ... UEFA must sacrifice some income from ticket sale to have one leg only instead of 2 in the Champions League. Even in domestic leagues, the board have to think about some way to reduce matches.

But of course, nothing is gonna changed unless they see a decrease in fans' interest due to these injuries. Although it's already like an epidemic !

From The H, on Sun 6 Jun 16:54
  17. KING SOLOMON - i totally agree with a winter break, even if it's only every second year before World Cup/Euro Championships. The tournament is being devalued to an extent with so many great players pulling out. A lot of them are important players who have either played a lot of games for their club sides this season or who have rushed back from injury to be fit for the tournament.

Don't get me wrong, it's still going to be a great tournament, but I want to see all the great players, and I want there to be upsets, but for nations like Ivory Coast and Nigeria to lose such big players makes it a lot more difficult for them to beat higher ranked teams.

I know injuries can happen to anyone at any time, but FIFA should do everything they can to protect the appeal of the tournament by giving players as much chance as they possibly can to keep in shape during the season and increase their chances of making the competition, and this means a winter break.

Players these days are putting their bodies through more physically during the season than ever before, and it's no surprise that the players that are missing are playing for the biggest teams who are playing more games than most teams per season

  19. So many injuries to too many players just reinforce my view that the English Premiership season (if not the whole of English football) needs a break halfway through. It is senseless asking the footballers to perform at peak level, up to 60 times with no break between matches of longer than 6 days and often 2-3 days.

And they are not "mummy's boys" or "soft" or "pampered" - and, even if they are, it is so that they can play the attractive, exciting football that we pay (a lot) for - precisely because it is great entertainment.

When squads were smaller in the 70's and players were forced to play, despite having injuries, the football was often a lot less interesting, less skilled. High pay and sponsorship,as well as the millionaires and billionaires have injected not just money but a lot of style into the game and we also have much more comfortable facilities. So stop whingeing about players getting injured, stop making out that they are all "wusses" (except for the ones who play for YOUR team) and start pressing for a winter break. That will cut down the wear and tear on players. Nothing is more frustrating than to be without your team's best players for weeks/months because of injuries. A break would help - but not eradicate the problem.

From King Solomon, on Sun 6 Jun 15:46
  20. wow, people certainly can write @#$% on these blogs!Injuries happen and life is tough but at least they are earning good money for doing what they love shame the injuries ruled these players out of the world cup but its tough at the top!
