Villa keen to clinch Milner deal

Sat 05 Jul, 12:30 PM

Aston Villa are hoping to make progress next week in their bid to sign winger James Milner from Premier League rivals Newcastle. The 22-year-old spent the 2005/6 season on loan at Villa, where David O'Leary was then manager.

However, current Villa boss Martin O'Neill is also an admirer of Milner's talents and is looking to lure him back to the city of Birmingham.

The former Leeds midfielder made 29 league appearances last season, scoring twice.

Milner was linked with a move to Liverpool earlier this summer but Anfield manager Rafael Benitez is now understood to have cooled his interest.
