Dragons Target First Hull Win

Sat 05 Jul, 01:09 PM

Catalans Dragons aim to keep the pressure on pacesetters Leeds and St Helens when they take on bogey side Hull at the KC Stadium on Sunday.

Now in their third season in Super League, the French club have beaten every other team apart from Leeds and Hull, although they forced a draw in the opening game of last season at the KC Stadium.

The third-placed Dragons - who have the chance to move to within a point of leaders Leeds - are going for an eighth win on their travels this year, including their Millennium Stadium victory over Harlequins, compared to six victories in Perpignan.

And they will not have the disadvantage of travel this weekend, having stayed in the north of England since gaining a 30-14 win over Wakefield in their re-arranged league match at Belle Vue on Tuesday.

"Catalans are a very strong, physical and formidable outfit and they are playing with a lot of confidence right now," admitted Hull coach Richard Agar.

"They have got a tremendous overseas contingent in key positions and they are very much bang in form.

"It now also looks as though the French players in the team have acclimatised to the rigours of week in, week out Super League and the travelling aspect they are faced with.

"If you look at the travel aspect they certainly don't appear to have a problem, having won six or seven times away from Perpignan this season - that is quite an achievement.

"They proved last year they could win the big games but probably didn't have the consistency. They now have that consistency."

While the Catalans are aiming for a sixth straight win, Hull are looking to arrest a dismal run that has brought them just one victory in their last seven Super League matches.

The match will mark the 100th appearance of utility player Graeme Horne, who has recovered from a calf injury.

"Graeme has still some good years ahead of him and we have yet to see the best of him in these colours," said Agar.

Horne, younger brother of half-back Richard, has some way to catch up on Lee Briers, who will make his 300th appearance for Warrington against Wakefield at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday.

Briers, who gave up the captaincy at the start of the season, becomes the 29th member of Warrington's 300 club and the first addition since recently-departed coach Paul Cullen.

Wakefield will give a debut to Australian full-back or winger Matt Peterson, who finally arrived in the country last weekend after lengthy delays caused by red tape.

"After all the delays with work permits etc, it's great to have Matt at Belle Vue," said coach John Kear. "He's arrived at a great time as we make our final push for a top-six spot and the semi-final fast approaching.

"He's fresh and raring to go and hopefully he can help conclude our season in a successful manner."

Bradford have former Huddersfield centre or second rower Chris Nero back after a six-match absence with a broken collarbone for their trip to the Giants and he is a straight replacement for the departed Shontayne Hape.

The Bulls also include captain Paul Deacon in their 19-man squad but he needs to pass a late fitness test on the hamstring injury that has kept him out of the last six games. The scrum-half needs four points for a Super League career total of 2,000.

Having ended a run of four successive defeats, Bradford are aiming for a third win in a row to consolidate their place in the top six at the expense of a side looking for their second victory in five matches.

"There is a spring in the step of the players and I think the change in the weather helps," said Bulls coach Steve McNamara.

Castleford coach Terry Matterson is hoping his team can bounce back from their 18-12 defeat at Leeds, where they let slip a 10-0 lead against a depleted home side, when they entertain Hull KR.

"We were very disappointed last Saturday at Headingley and I'm hoping that we will see a reaction," he said. "We had the chances to win that game so I'll be looking for a far better completion this week.

"Rovers have had a disappointing spell by their standards so I imagine that they will be expecting to get back on track."
