Top Spot Beckons For Saints

Sat 05 Jul, 07:09 AM

St Helens have the chance to take full advantage of Leeds' latest slip when they meet Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop tonight.

Six points adrift of the reigning engage Super League champions just a month ago, Saints can draw level if they make it 13 successive wins at the expense of the Londoners.

Victory by a 32-point margin - not inconceivable given Saints' free-scoring form of late - would even enable Daniel Anderson's men to leapfrog the Rhinos into pole position.

St Helens are able to recall stand-off Leon Pryce, man of the match in England's 56-8 rout of France a week ago, to line up alongside the rest of his international team-mates.

James Roby, Paul Wellens, Ade Gardner, Jon Wilkin, Maurie Fa'asavalu and James Graham will all face a test of endurance as they go into their third game in nine days but coach Daniel Anderson is confident their busy schedule will not take a heavy toll.

"It's not as brutal as Easter," he said. "In between the two games, the players get the chance for recovery, massage, training and rest.

"Also the fields are harder so it doesn't take as much out of your legs.

"All the England players pulled up really well and they'll all play."

Harlequins are without half-back Danny Orr, who damaged a hamstring in training, but they are able to call on captain Rob Purdham and winger Rikki Sheriffe, who have both missed the last three matches through injury, as they look to get their play-off bid back on track after four defeats in five games.

"They are probably a bit disappointed with the way they've played the last couple of weeks," said Anderson.

Meanwhile, the Saints boss admits he has begun his preparations for the Challenge Cup semi-final with Leeds later this month.

Anderson would cherish a hat-trick of cup final triumphs before returning to Australia at the end of the year and the last-four clash at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium on July 26 is on his mind.

"It's in our plans," he said. "From the time we played Leeds (in the league), we've been planning for the semi-final, physically.

"It's not like we're thinking about it but training has been tailored for that game and we're playing games along the way."
