Gillingham manager Mark Stimson is keen to find out if midfielder Kevin Maher will be joining the club ahead of the new campaign.

The 31-year-old spent the final two months of last season on loan at Priestfield and, after his release from Southend, has been training regularly with the club during the summer.

And Stimson, who takes his squad to Spain for a training break next week, wants to secure his services on a permanent basis.

"We're going to try to put something to him in the next 48 hours and force his arm a little," he told KentOnline. "We want to know whether he's going to join or us not. It would be great if he did because he looks good in training.

"I know he's good enough to play in League One and that's probably eating away in his mind.

"If we were a League One side he would have signed by now. It's not right to have him training with us and me thinking he could be in my plans - I would like to know yes or no."
