Rangers willing to sell players, says Smith

Sun 05 Jul, 02:00 PM

GLASGOW (AFP) - Rangers manager Walter Smith has confirmed that the Glasgow club will listen to bids for any player currently on its books.

Ibrox officials made it clear back in January they could be forced to sell key players in a bid to balance the books, although no big names left at that time.

Rangers fans had hoped winning the Premier League - and securing automatic entry into the lucrative group stages of the Champions League as a result - would mean holding on to their top stars.

But Smith told the Sunday Mail: "What happened in January is still there. Every player is susceptible to a bid.

"We told them circumstances meant we had to sell a player and we're still in that situation.

"I know there's a feelgood factor after winning the double but this doesn't go away.

"Yes, it's far less of a problem than in January. But the problem most teams out of the big leagues have is still at Rangers' door."

Smith has also revealed there will be no major signings ahead of the new campaign.

"We won't be spending a lot on players just because we're in the Champions League. We still have to be prudent."

  4. Bhoyd loves rangers and that's why he didn't go - He's been treated pretty bad by waller and still stays - But he doesn't realise they will have to sell to survive... The recession is nearly as bad as the 30s and the banks want their money back... The only recourse is to sell the big names... Bougherra or mendes are the only two that you can sell for over a million... And if Bhoyd goes, then no goalscorer, simple.

.mmm we had this at January and good money was offered for Boyd who said no ....#
We spent money on young players last year like Edu and Lafferty who are breaking through now also Thompson is coming back Boogie will stay for this year anyway unless mega money is offered or him

  7. Gilly...Rangers spent more money than Celtic last year u moron

  8. Remember when you used to have all the money gilly eh? We don't have bags of money, we just don't come out with silly statements like 'For every fiver they spend, we'll spend a tenner'... Good financial policy that isn't it?
And it's not the same as last year... Some players have already left like Hemdani, and a lot more NEED to go...

  9. I like to hear all this @#$% about rangers this and rangers that. We might have nothing but it's the same as we had last year. And what did you LOSE to this poor club this year I bet you that's what hurt you the most your club with all their money and you have nothing at the end of the year pity goes to those that have nothing ALL MY BEST MATE

From Stuart, on Mon 6 Jul 2:01PM
  11. If they offered 5 million for Caldwell, Scott Brown or Glen Loovens then no, I don't think Big Tony would sell... He's only getting rid of fringe players or ones out of contract - He can afford to build a team... What you aren't understanding is that most of the Rangers Squad HAS to be sold... And with already having the money from champions league and STILL having to sell players, then surely that is some serious finacial difficulty... If that is 'nothing to worry about' then you must be on some seriously strong medication.

From NokturnalKelt, on Mon 6 Jul 12:40PM
  12. it isnt anything to worry about............. of course any player is up for sale if the price is right ...look at what happened at man utd recently ...
if they offered millions for any player at Rangers they will take it ...are you going to tell me that if they offered 5 million for any celtic player that Mogga wouldnt take that?
I dont see any club in Scotland making any big signings this window unless they sell first
