Champions League - Perez calls for 'Super League'

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is plotting a football revolution in Europe after calling for the continent's biggest clubs to create a new 'Super League'.

Perez, who returned for a second stint as president of the Spanish giants last month, has embarked on a multi-million spending spree over the past few weeks, signing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema as part of his plan to assemble a new generation of galacticos.

The 62-year-old is now casting his net even wider in his bid to alter the face of European football, and told Spanish television: "We have to agree a new European Super League which guarantees that the best always play the best - something that does not happen in the Champions League."

Perez added, however, that he hoped his proposed format could be implemented "without abandoning the national leagues".

  1. Finally a great idea from this man.

Imagine a competition where the best teams play according to quality and not national borders!

Imagine a competition like NBA only instead of all-american one - an all european one!

Like the current CL, only full year of league football among the best teams in Europe - let's say top 5 in Spain, top 5 or 6 from England, 3 or 4 from Italy, 2 from each Germany, France and Russia and a few others - from Portugal, Netherlands, etc.

Not as an add-on to national league with a short playoff in the spring like now, but same as current national leagues only a REAL european league, to create the most powerful competition in the history of sport.

Football is the most popular sport, but unlike the NBA it's too split into small competitions, so that many teams are too weak in the spring, especially those who fight for the national title during the same weeks.

Don't be nationalistic sheep like majority, the best league will lift the sport higher, even as many smaller clubs will have to settle for local competitions. But hey, they do that now as well.

No1 place to sport, No2 to money, and No3 to useless nationalism. Much better than the current situtation.

  2. I have a suggestion to the Spanish football association and UEFA, since Real Madrid are dying for trophies and they would do anything to collect as many as they can (regardless of the destructive they are making to the game), you may make a copy of the Spanish league and the champions league trophies and present them to real Madrid at the end of each season and spare the game the damage which we are witnessing by the spoiled behavior of a supposedly a great club.

  3. Yes, please do.
Take the self-proclaimed 'Big-4' - they won't be missed here in England!
Oh, and when it all comes crashing down around their greedy, selfish ears they can start again here in England . . . in the Conference!

  4. Perez is one man whose attitude to the game of soccer dazzles me. First, he brought back d galacticos era, an idea that left Madrid in the doldrums from 2002 to 2006, and now he wants a "Super League". Pathetic!

  5. To the last comment SashKa, "biggest money and salaries are in NBA" WRONG! its baseball! ARod, Jeter and texeria are the 3 highest paid players (all play for the yankees) in the world of any sport and CRon is the 4th. NBA does not have the biggest salaries its baseball!

would love to see a salary cap tho, sure has made NHL more interesting over the past few years!

  6. omg this mans think he can rule the world now.....you didnt manage to beat liverpool in the champions league and now you want a super league to play on your own!!!! listen mr perez...football is a game people like to watch and enjoy and what you are doing to the whole market is unfair cause you are really ignoring the game but only thinking about money...please lock him up....where is mr platini???? he is only against english clubs and leave this idiot do what he wants??????

  7. F#%k Florentino Perez and his stupid plans !

A Salary Cap should be implemented though in order to even the top teams and not let Perez causing inflations and criris by taking astronomical credits to buy everyone he wants ! Pathetic !

Look how NBA works ! Sport No. 1 is footbal, but the biggest money and salaries are in NBA.

  8. "SUPER LEAGUE" is a new name for old European Cup.Todays CL? A competition made up of champions...not.How come 3/4 teams in each group never won there domestic league and they still have seeding in the groups.Since the start of the CL,you could almost handpick the last 8 from the 1st round.CL was devised so the bigger clubs would not lose out on money from being knockout out at the 1st round through a bad draw.
Some nice football on show atm but no real excitement until the later rounds.
The world economy is falling to the ground and all we here is how to make more money from football, which in turn means from the fans.
Give us back our 1 game a week,Sat 3:00 kick off and let us take our luck from the draw in European Cups.
We dont need 50 camera angles,2hrs of build up another 2hrs of review the match etc.
Current CL format still produces half filled stadiums in europe,an idea something is wrong...

  11. based on the results gained by real in the UCL, at least in the last 5 years, shows that they don't deserve even a place in the super league.....really pathetic...."low-profile" teams (like atletico, fenerbache, porto, schalke) reached to do better than real reached to do....

  12. It's better for Florentino Perez to SHUT UP... because he destroyed the football around the world with his over-priced signings, so how come the likes of Bayern and Man U don't participate in his @#$$% idea?
Does he still want Ribery? didn't he know that he's not for sale yet? he still wants wings, so it's better for him to get them from KFC!

    Real win nothing.... Bayern RULE

  13. This is actually the only thing Perez has said that I agree with, I think it sounds like a very good idea, the Champions League, good as it is (And I say this as a Barcelona fan) is a cup competition. Therefore theres always going to be questions over who's the best in the world, even when they win. A League would settle this I think....

  14. Real Madrid in super league?? more like an amateur league after this great club has been bankrupted by some daft old dreamer, it reminds me of the old spurs side under Ardilles all out attack no defence, as soon as the meet a team of pedigree in champions league next year there out, and i think Barca will win La Liga.

  15. he is the most stupid chairman i had ever seen in the whole world, he thinks selling T shirts will bring him the money he spent where others can sell T shirts without paying this amount of money, the issue is how much u gonna make. to be honest with u guys i hate cheaters and they are the biggest.

  16. I dont know what sleeping pills perez has been taking but i think someone needs to check his prescription. He is out of his mind, the champions league is the league for all big "super" clubs.I think Real Madrid has gone to his head.P.S United for life.

  17. Only and Only if they pay they will win trouphies other wise managers, coaches and players have nothing to do with the result, no wonder they have fired cappillo when he win the liga after three years 0 result. we all know how they work and how they treat others. in few years hopefully they will be at second devision when they have no money to buy anyone or any trouphy. a team with no base will always be a side team and cant copmete with the pros such as barca, liverpool or man u. a policy of stealing players from the others will never last. i have advised them so many times to creat their own players in order to survive between the others. a team with no policy except stealing the players from other will never win anything.

  18. it is a disgrace what is happening, spending this ridiculous amount of money. and now they want to destroy the entire notion of sport. it is fair to let also the smaller clubs to participate in any European competition even though they have a small chance to win it.

Just thought i'd inform you that Liverpool Football Club is not in debt, but its parent company that holds its asset is.
Ford motor company was in debt but its asset at the time Aston Martin was not. Just because the parent is in debt doesn't make the subsidiary the same way. Its a was of tax management :P
On the same note, Utd could easily be structured in the same way, but i believe currently the debt is owed by the club. Chelsea on the other hand are bank rolled by one man so it will be a directors loan, but there is no stopping of a restructure in the same way.
Madrid are bank rolled literally. Arsenal are in debt due to the stadium that was financed with securities against season ticket sales. Need i go on?

Personally, if they forced a wage cap it would create more problem than it solves. The divide between the haves and havenots would be bigger. At least currently the champions league is a potential target for clubs. Everton had their chance a few years back and Villa had a good run for it this year.

MAYBE a solution for many of the problems is to force the need for homegrown players for match days.
e.g. the current bench of 5-7 players could be extended to 10 players but the squad must include at least 5 under 21s that have been with the club for at least 2 years.
This wouldn't greatly effect the current situation but there would be a renewed emphasis on youth development.
