La Liga - Ronaldo: Liga now better than Prem

Eurosport - Sun, 05 Jul 23:35:00 2009

Cristiano Ronaldo believes that La Liga will leave its English counterpart trailing in terms of quality next season following Real Madrid's massive summer spending spree.

Madrid have taken the transfer market by storm over the last month and are close to smashing the £200 million mark on signings after agreeing deals for Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol.

And Ronaldo claims that will make La Liga a cut above the Premier League, telling Spanish newspaper Marca: "The Premier League is a very good competition, but I think that the Spanish league is going to have a little more quality because of the players that are arriving."

He added: "Both leagues are going to be very good, but I think that with Florentino Perez's signings the Spanish league is superior to the English.

"It's going to be a magnificent competition in Spain this year. All the players have a lot of quality and the referees protect the players more."

Much is expected of big-spending Madrid next season as they look to hit back from a disappointing 2008/09 campaign, which not only saw them finish empty-handed but, adding salt to their wounds, also ended up with arch rivals Barcelona walking off with an unprecedented treble.

Madrid were also left red-faced once again in the Champions League, falling at the last-16 stage for the fifth successive year after being humbled 5-0 on aggregate by Liverpool.

The nine-times European champions will be desperate for a much better showing next year, especially with the final being held at the Bernabeu, and Ronaldo believes they will be amongst the favourites.

"To win the Champions League in our stadium would be a great dream. I think it's possible with all the players we have.

"(However), you need to recognise that the champions, Barca, had a great season and played very well. They have a great team and a magnificent coach. It's going to be a very important duel for Spanish and European football and very nice for all of us. I think it will be a great season."

  1. suddenly ronaldo`s an expert on spanish football and he has`nt even kicked a ball there yet,
mind you he probably said that about the EPL just cos he used to play in it.

  2. . so it starts already this is Madrid's marketing machine telling CR what to say and like a good little puppet complies. Sure The Spanish league Madrid can go and buy all the best players. CR Madrid and Barcelona have the best quality players not the Spanish League the Spanish league is going to be reduced to a 2 horse race which will actually reduce the entertainment value of the league. In terms of excitement, Global appeal, popularity the EPL is untouchable This is what money can't buy.
Football unfortunately like it or not is about money now not about talent. Its not about Managers team tactics players, youth training. but the power of the Cheque books

  4. 343 absolutely spot on. Ronaldo tanslated to English means "strong cow or bull ..." which is quite funny really since Ronaldo speaks a lot of bull and also spends most of his time rolling on the grass, once again very much like the cow or bull. Of course when Mr Arrogant moves to Italy in 2 seasons that will be the best league in the world ...ah well.

  7. LA LIGA ARE ALWAYS BETTER EVEN WITHOUT HIM.LA LIGA IS BETTER LEAGUE THATS WHY HE WANT TO COME TO SPAIN.BUT NOT BECAUSE OF HIM. HE WILL END UP LIKE BECKHAM AND ALL MADRID GALACTICS IN THE PAST.HIS CAREER WILL DIVING DEEP.

LAST SEASON-SAVIOLA,VAN NISTELROOY,DRENTRE,PEPE,HUNTERLAR ,VANDER VAART,EVEN THE COACH ARE SUPERSTAR-BUT STILL THEY CAN`T BEAT BARCA(WITH YOUNG LOCAL PLAYER&ONE BEST PLAYER MESSI)

SAVIOLA ARE BETTER WHEN HE WITH BARCA BUT WHEN HE CAME TO RM,HE`S NOT. I THINK MANU SHOULD GO FOR SAVIOLA.HE WILL SHINE AGAIN(BUT NOT WITH RM).LASTLY FOR RONALDO,MY COMMENT IS MESSI BETTER THAN HIM.

All of the EPL teams can beat the best teams in the world, but La liga has only 2 teams that is getting better and they are not that good.

  12. Ronaldo you are a great player but know @#$% Premier is great because of the great security in stadiums they have 4 big teams and not just 2 and referees are part of the great premier league because they respect a tough game.

  15. Ronaldos just trying 2 make a good impression in spain. Fair play. I proberly would. Dont agree though. With the possible exeption of united all the big four will get stronger and theyve dominated the champions league for a few yrs now. The thing that makes the premiership great tho is how competitive it is. Real spending 400mil isnt guna change that or anything.

  16. Arrrggg! I'm so sick of the same $#!+ comments..... soccer, football, futbol, knattspyrna, sokker, podosfero, zúqiú, etc. all are different words for the same game so GET OVER IT! now on to the item ACTUALLY at hand here in this article, Ronaldo is correct. The flux of talent is now favoring La Liga. The EPL had it for the last 4 or 5 years, Serie A for a few years before that. This is just the ebb and flow of the game in Europe. For those wigging out, don't worry, it won't stay in La Liga forever, it never does.
