Former Newcastle manager has tipped Michael Owen to rebuild his career after sealing a surprise move to champions Manchester United.
Souness brought Owen to St James' Park for £17 million four years ago but the move turned sour for the England striker following a succession of injuries and the club's relegation at the end of last season.
But while doubts persist over the wisdom of the deal done by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Souness believes his fellow Scot has pulled a masterstroke and told The People: "I don't think Michael is shot. It's a really good transfer for all concerned."
He added: "I think the move will excite him and give him whole new lease of life
"He was Newcastle's top player at the time and all of that onus was on him. At United he will be just another player and surrounded by really good team-mates who can give him the service he needs.
"He will also be in the best environment in terms of treatment off the field and that is important to any player of his age."
Commenting on Ferguson's gamble, he added: "I think this is a smart deal for him. It's a clever one especially when there are not too many available targets out there.
"In fact this could easily be the deal of the season if it works out for him."

Wow! these scousers are really hopeing Owen will fail, they must be bricking it that he dont score the winner for United at Anfield. Personally I think Fereguson knows more about football, Owen and his fitness than most. Owen will get the absolute best treatment and care at United, this is a fantastic opportunity for Owen to win a premier league medal and get to the world cup, and he know's it.
Old form that is what he is now he will never get back to the form of his younger years.
His mind might be sharp but his body will never be again.
Personally I think Sir Alex has done a fantastic job but I think you might just see him make his first mistake in signing owen.
He has never made a full recovery since his knee injury when playing for England all them years ago.
He has had all these years to get back to his old form and still hasn't.
So how is Man U going to get him back to his old form, simple they are not.
Should of left where he was in the Championship.
Sorry to all you Man U fans but the truth hurts!!!!!!!!!!
What would Sounes know a great player but couldn't manage a pub team.
Owen, well done on making a move that will not only give you the team you needed to rebuild your career but also a move that I'm sure could see you once again become the premierships top scorer and who knows maybe PFA player of the year again, because that willo happen if you get back to your old form, and I beleive you will under the wings of Fergie. Well done mate!
Souness is full of @#$%! The only way to counteract the negative karma of Souness saying Owen will be great is if Eamonn Dunphy makes a prediction of an absolute catastrophe!:D
MAN UTD WILL BE PLAYING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT SEASON WITH HULL HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
MAN UTD WILL BE PLAYING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT SEASON WITH HULL HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Didnt Bobby Robson sign Owen ... ? i am sure he did ...
It seems that two Scots namely Souness and SAF believe that Owen will be a success at Man U. Personally, I can't see it particularly in the light of his injury record over the last few seasons. It will be a disaster. SAFcontinues to bring in five feet nothing kids and then promptly puts them out on loan to develop. He seems to be completely blind to the fact that we NEED skilful players in midfield who have both an athletic and physical presence coupled with the ability to retain possession of the ball. It must have been obvious to any inteligent Man U fan that our players get the ball taken off them far too easily and unless SAF does something about this and quickly, we will not compete with the other "Big Three" in the Premiership, all of whom contain more competitive and skilful athletes than Man U. Ferguson needs to wake up and do something about it.
BALLSDEEP.........GET A LIFE YOU FILTH TW*T.........WHAT I HAVE SEEN FROM YOUR POSTS ON OTHER SITES, YOU WISH HE WOULD BRAKE A LEG IN HIS FIRST GAME FOR UNITED, AND YOU HAVE GONE ON ABOUT MUNICH........ YOU ARE SCUM...FILTH.....5HITE.......GGMU GGMU
pianomusiclive, comment 46, your like a dripping tap
As a Liverpool supporter I say thank you Fergie. Thanks for taking that money-grubbing, trophy seeking, has-been off the market. When Liverpool won the CL after Owen left for Madrid I laughed myself stupid and I will laugh again when Liverpool win the Premiership, FA Cup, and CL next season.
I'm sure he'll prove himself being with a top team . What a taisty season we have coming up !
AIG....Alex is GOD
