Busquets would welcome Mascherano competition

Sun 05 Jul, 02:18 PM

Barcelona midfielder Sergi Busquets insists he would welcome the addition of Javier Mascherano to the treble-winners squad this summer, even though it could spell bad news for his own hopes of securing a starting berth.

Barca have been closely linked with a move for Liverpool man Mascherano as coach Pep Guardiola looks to add reinforcements to his all-conquering squad.

If the European champions do manage to persuade Liverpool to part with the Argentina captain then it will add further competition to an already impressive midfield contingent at the Nou Camp. One of the players whose position could be most threatened by the arrival of Mascherano is the 20-year-old Busquets, but the Spain international is not looking at it like that.

Asked if he was worried by the possibility of Barca bringing in Mascherano, Busquets said in El Mundo Deportivo: "No, the more players that come the better, and they will be welcomed. He is a magnificent player and hopefully he can be added.

"The most important thing is that the signings will add to the squad," said Busquets, who believes he has slightly different attributes to Mascherano anyway.

"He is also a defensive player, but perhaps he moves around a lot more conducting play and I maintain my position more and play the ball quicker."

  2. Ive got to agree that Owen will be a buy of the year. He will get the service he needs to score goals and only wish Liverpool would have offered him the same package. Well done Man Utd very cleaver.

  4. 17 oh no we didn't!! Anyone who dreams of Owen as a striker is thinking of him from 2003, not now. Anyway, he never was a real team player - he always just stayed up front, looking for service. A true Red would track back and help defend. He never did.

  5. Owen, when he's fit and confident, can be a great striker. Trouble is, these days that applies about 1/3 of the time. Fergie is right to give him a performance-incentive style package - if he delivers, he gets the big bucks, but if he has another "Newcastle year" the cost to old Red-Nose is modest.
But Liverpool canot afford gambles on potential "passengers" or hospital patients. As Rafa says, we have to be very careful in using our limited cash. Johnson is one good signing; we need one more. Just one. Then the title will be in our grasp.

  7. #10 im not saing that sir alex is not good, yes he made signning that worked out well, teddy sheringam, cantona, to name few, but then he also do a big mistake. did u guys realise over 20 years, how much sir alex signing work and how muc it fail? i doubt it will have too much different ratio. what im trying to said is i hope manU fan dont be too optimistic, owen has been injury prone for past few season and all of the sudden he is back? capello even drop him yet he dont have any reaction at all when he is at new castle? but the good news is manU can afford that mistake. team fighting for relegation cannot afford to that mistake, paying his basic salary week in, week out for nothing. honestly, i do think this wouldnt work out. sorry manU fans, i think u guys too optimistic. yeah in ferguson u guys trust.. but he do make mistake sometime.

  11. I hope Mascherano and Alonso stays! It will be better for everybody! I dont understand why Barca needs another central midfilder? They have Xavi, Iniesta, Keita, Busquets, Toure. Or Marquez,V.Sanchez and Assulin. If Barca want so much a CM, then bring back Fabregas! Visca el Barca!!!

  14. Clueless mancs on here again... 8 - you really think owen would have rather gone to mancs then us?? if we wanted him hed be playing for us. 7 - chelsea return to normal?! there normal is about 10th in the league usually its just because they've had some money pumped in for the last 5 years you've gone up... they'll get back to their nobody selves sooner or later expecially as the russians loosing money all over the place!
