Souness backs Owen for United success

Sun 05 Jul, 09:46 AM

Former Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has tipped Michael Owen to rebuild his career after sealing a surprise move to champions Manchester United.

Souness brought Owen to St James' Park for £17million four years ago but the move turned sour for the England striker following a succession of injuries and the club's relegation at the end of last season.

But while doubts persist over the wisdom of the deal done by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Souness believes his fellow Scot has pulled a masterstroke and told The People: "I don't think Michael is shot. It's a really good transfer for all concerned."

He added: "I think the move will excite him and give him whole new lease of life

"He was Newcastle's top player at the time and all of that onus was on him. At United he will be just another player and surrounded by really good team-mates who can give him the service he needs.

"He will also be in the best environment in terms of treatment off the field and that is important to any player of his age."

Commenting on Ferguson's gamble, he added: "I think this is a smart deal for him. It's a clever one especially when there are not too many available targets out there.

"In fact this could easily be the deal of the season if it works out for him."

  1. It seems that two Scots namely Souness and SAF believe that Owen will be a success at Man U. Personally, I can't see it particularly in the light of his injury record over the last few seasons. It will be a disaster. SAFcontinues to bring in five feet nothing kids and then promptly puts them out on loan to develop. He seems to be completely blind to the fact that we NEED skilful players in midfield who have both an athletic and physical presence coupled with the ability to retain possession of the ball. It must have been obvious to any inteligent Man U fan that our players get the ball taken off them far too easily and unless SAF does something about this and quickly, we will not compete with the other "Big Three" in the Premiership, all of whom contain more competitive and skilful athletes than Man U. Ferguson needs to wake up and do something about it.

you got owen simply because we at NUFC did not have enough cash to offer him a new contract; he was undoubtably our best striker. The rest were, and are surplus to requirements, NUFC are now(a Championship club)People like you are the reason why your club and its fans are worshiped the world over! I bet you love manchester united and i bet you've never even been to Sid James Park.We are the loser's.
As for souness; always willing to stick the knife into the back of NUFC at every opportunity; just as well because they had the audacity to sack him for being one of the best and able managers in the club's 100 plus year history!
We will miss visiting old trafford, probably for many seasons cosidering the way things are at the moment.Good luck and good fortune to Owen, now he has a proper team around him,he will surely score many goals.
