Souness backs Owen for United success

Sun 05 Jul, 09:46 AM

Former Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has tipped Michael Owen to rebuild his career after sealing a surprise move to champions Manchester United.

Souness brought Owen to St James' Park for £17million four years ago but the move turned sour for the England striker following a succession of injuries and the club's relegation at the end of last season.

But while doubts persist over the wisdom of the deal done by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Souness believes his fellow Scot has pulled a masterstroke and told The People: "I don't think Michael is shot. It's a really good transfer for all concerned."

He added: "I think the move will excite him and give him whole new lease of life

"He was Newcastle's top player at the time and all of that onus was on him. At United he will be just another player and surrounded by really good team-mates who can give him the service he needs.

"He will also be in the best environment in terms of treatment off the field and that is important to any player of his age."

Commenting on Ferguson's gamble, he added: "I think this is a smart deal for him. It's a clever one especially when there are not too many available targets out there.

"In fact this could easily be the deal of the season if it works out for him."

you got owen simply because we at NUFC did not have enough cash to offer him a new contract; he was undoubtably our best striker. The rest were, and are surplus to requirements, NUFC are now(a Championship club)People like you are the reason why your club and its fans are worshiped the world over! I bet you love manchester united and i bet you've never even been to Sid James Park.We are the loser's.
As for souness; always willing to stick the knife into the back of NUFC at every opportunity; just as well because they had the audacity to sack him for being one of the best and able managers in the club's 100 plus year history!
We will miss visiting old trafford, probably for many seasons cosidering the way things are at the moment.Good luck and good fortune to Owen, now he has a proper team around him,he will surely score many goals.

  8. Hey up Cameron, nothing happening at NUFC site, that's why your here.
Do us all a favour and go back to sleep.
The only loser here is you and your ridiculous club.
The signing of Owen shows dramatically the failings at NUFC,your embarrasment is not difficult to understand. Its a shame you happen to support or pretend to support such a smalltime idiotic outfit.
Your character comes across just like them, weak and insipid. You will have to consult your dic tionaryaryary.

  13. give the guy a break, hey its a good move for everyone, owen will be just another player at utd and not the superstar everyone expects to score all the time, he will be a squad player and that will give him a chance to see what he neds to do, he is 29, he can read the game from the bench and see what he needs to do when and if he eventually does play a part, just like ole did, no pressure on him, he never cost a bean so lets see what all the negatives think about it when he eventually does retain his fitness and starts scoring as i am more than sure he will, go on michael owen show us what you are all about...

From GRAHAM C, on Sun 5 Jul 10:46AM
  14. It was pathetic at first glance....but once you sit back and digest it....its a good move for utd.

We were initially upset because we viewed the signing as a replacement ...but lets face reality Utd's coffers are still full to purchase those players we need.....and Owen is free.he cost us no0thing and if he captures any form even close to his potential then great if not then so what.....Utd is in a win win situation.

I baulked on my cornflakes when i heard we'd signed him till i realised this guy was FREE.....

WE ALSO HAVE THE ADDED BONUS OF BACKRAPING SHEARER ....if Owen is a success poor Shearer will be gutted...Owen will have shown the fagbastid that a move to utd is always the right move....Shearer never had the bottle to come to utd...that was always the problem with him anyway..look how long he took to bang in goals for England...no balls shearer wasted his career...

From phil k, on Sun 5 Jul 10:34AM
  15. how this is a bad deal i do not know he was a free signing any other player utd wanted was priced at silly money in three years time utd will have the three top scorers in english football history charlton rooney owen
