Sri Lanka make inroads

Sri Lanka's bowlers chipped away at Pakistan's top order as they tightened their grip on day two of the first Test in Galle.

Fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara dismissed nightwatchman Abdur Rauf for 31, while Angelo Mathews claimed the wicket of captain Younus Khan as Pakistan's reply faltered.

Mohammad Yousuf, playing his first Test since December 2007, assumed command and was on 30 as the visitors reached 120 for four at lunch. Misbah-ul Haq was unbeaten on 16 at the break.

For the first hour, Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara had tested Younus and Rauf with pace and movement, both in the air and off the seam.

Rauf, who had clobbered Ajantha Mendis for a boundary of the first ball of the day, had staved off the bowlers for the better part of the first hour until he feathered a catch to stand-in wicketkeeper Tillakaratne Dilshan.

By then the fast bowler had the job done, putting on 50 runs for the third wicket with his captain.

Younus, who had survived two run out attempts in the brief session of play yesterday, had looked far from composed as he scratched around for 25.

Mathews finally ended his resistance, drawing him forward and inducing an edge which Dilshan held neatly with a sharp dive to his right.
