Nigerian striker Kanu has finally settled for signing a new one-year contract at Portsmouth - just before their season starts on Sunday with the FA Community Shield match against Manchester United at Wembley.
Kanu scored winning goals for Pompey in both the FA Cup semi-final and final last season and used those statistics as material to barter for a longer-term deal at the age of 32.
But he has settled in the end for exactly the same as this time last year - a new one-year deal with an option for an extra year if he plays a certain number of matches, believed to be around 20, this season.
Pompey, who have signed £11million Peter Crouch to partner £7million Jermain Defoe up front, would not budge on Kanu's demands for a longer contract because of the player's age and vulnerability to injury.
He said: "I'm delighted to have signed. I've been with these players for two years now and the spirit is fantastic.
"The manager Harry Redknapp is the main man and I love the fans. They are the best in the league, like a 12th man in the team.
"And I want to score more goals than last season (only four in the Premier League) and more like my first season here (12).
"Above all I want to give 100 per cent all the time."
Kanu was signed by Redknapp on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion in August 2006 after high-profile spells with Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal.
He is currently sidelined by a thigh injury and is battling to be fit for Sunday's Wembley clash.
He added on Portsmouth's website: "I'm doing a programme with the physios and getting better, so I wouldn't want to rule myself out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed."

Just nice for Kanu to have accepted the 1yr contract. He's no longer the Papilo we used to know in his Arsenal days where he easily scores a hat-trick against Chelsea in just 15mins time.Quite good if he happens to get up to 20 games this season but I doubt if he can continue after this season.
Ride on Papillo.
McCarthy (Warri, Nigeria)
GLAD HE SIGNED too
I expect him to move ELSEWHERE after this, AJAX calling....hmmnnnn
At last! It's about time Kanu stopped acting like a big time charlie and put pen to paper. He seems to think he is still in his prime, and whilst he was one of the world's most gifted footballers, he is nothing more than a squad player now and should have the grace to accept his lot. I still think we need another stiker, as Nugent just doesn't look the part, and Utaka has really struggled to adapt to the english game. I hope they both prove me very wrong. Play Up Pompey!
