Premier League - Van der Sar out for eight weeks

Eurosport - Wed, 05 Aug 15:11:00 2009

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a broken finger and bone in his left hand.

The 38-year-old Dutchman sustained the injury saving a penalty from Danijel Pranjic in the Red Devils' 7-6 shoot-out defeat to Bayern Munich in the pre-season Audi Cup in Germany.

Van der Sar is not expected to be back in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans until late September, meaning the Scot will have to turn to either Ben Foster or Tomasz Kuszczak between the posts for the start of the new season.

The Dutchman could miss up to 12 matches and is unlikely to return before August 29 at the earliest.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson last month backed Foster, 26, to eventually establish himself as England's first-choice goalkeeper.

The 26-year-old has kept four clean sheets in 10 appearances for the club following his move from Stoke City in July 2005 and has long been touted as Van der Sar's eventual replacement.

Kuszczak, meanwhile, has played 37 times for the club since his move from West Brom in the summer of 2006.

United face Chelsea in the Community Shield on Aug 9, before opening the defence of their Premier League title a week later against Birmingham.

  3. #90 Ronnie had ONE outstanding season , we won what we won last year despite him , not because of him, ( excluding the Porto away goal he wasn't that outstanding)
You will have to try better than that to convince any match going UNITED fan that we won't be top come May.

  7. Ronaldo and Tevez are gone, both will be missed but there weren’t too many occasions when they were both on the pitch together anyway. Owen will get goals; Valencia looks the business in pre-season. Couple that with a greater team spirit without Ronaldo's petulance and United will be the team to beat. As for Liverpool, Alonso according to most Scousers on this site is the best player in the world in his position. If that's the case then he will be clearly missed and impossible to replace. Gerrard The Coward and Torres will suffer due to Alonso’s departure. Chelsea will be a greater threat than Liverpool as they have better players. Arsenal finished the season in impressive form but can they sustain it throughout the season. It's Manchester United to become the first team to win nineteen and four in a row. Liverpool=YAWN you ain’t winning nowt. And that's a FACT!

HAS ANYBODY TOLD FERGIE THAT HE'S SOLD THE PLAYER WHO HAS ALMOST SINGLE HANDED WON THE LEAGUES FOR MAN U FOR THE LAST FEW SEASONS (CR7), AND THE PLAYER THAT SCORED CRUCIAL GOALS TO BRING THEM BACK INTO CONTENTION IN THE 2008/09 SEASON?
WHICH TEAM FINISHED THE LAST CAMPAIN THE STRONGER AND TOOK MORE POINTS FROM THE TOP 4 DESPITE BEING WITHOUT GERRARD AND TORRES FOR SIGNIFICANT PERIODS. YES ALONSO HAS GONE, BUT JOHNSON IS A SIGNIFICANT SIGNING A WILL MORE THAN ADD TO ALONSO'S GOAL TALLY LAST YEAR. WITH £30M TO SPEND ALONSO'S QUALITIES SHOULD BE MATCHED AND BETTERED (ONLY SCORED 4 GOALS LAST SEASON).
AS FOR NOT DESERVING TO WIN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, I SEEM TO REMEMBER A CERTAIN FINAL WHERE CHELSEA PLAYED MAN U OFF THE PARK AND LOST IN THE MOST FARCICAL FASHION EVER (TERRY'S SLIP).
THE LEAGUE WILL AGAIN BE BETWEEN THE BIG 4' AND THE TEAM THAT WINS IT WILL NEED THE 'RUB OF THE GREEN' BUT PLEASE LET IT BE WON ON THE PITCH AND NOT BY MINDLESS MIND GAMES.
PS DID SAF MAKE HIS COMMENT BEFORE HE HEARD THAT VAN DER SAR IS OUT FOR A FEW MONTHS AND THAT THE FA ARE GOING TO PENALISE TEAM WHOSE MANAGERS THAT CRITICISE REFEREES BEFORE GAMES?
