Premier League - Fabregas given warm reception

PA Sport - Thu, 05 Aug 13:43:00 2010

Barcelona target Cesc Fabregas was given a warm welcome by 10,000 Arsenal fans on his return to training.

The Gunners captain has been at the centre of speculation linking him with a return to the Catalan giants all summer.

Barca, the club with whom Fabregas began his career, made a £30 million bid for the midfielder earlier this summer, only to be told by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger that the player was not for sale at any price.

A series of public statements by Barca's most prominent players advocating a move for the World Cup winner has only served to increase speculation that Fabregas will leave the club.

Nevertheless, the Spain star looked at ease as he lined up alongside Wenger and the rest of the Arsenal squad for the team photo at the Emirates Stadium, perhaps an indication that he will remain at the club he joined as a 15-year-old for at least another season.

Fabregas and Robin van Persie, who had also been granted an extended holiday following his World Cup exploits with Holland, trained in front of Arsenal fans at the club's members' day in north London.

  6. Masamba: why are you blaming Arsenal for this mess? It has been caused by Barca every step of the way, and every step has been inthe wrong direction. Having made their position clear from the very beginning, all Arsenal have done, just like the rest of us, is watch the Barca management and players make fools of themselves. What else could they do? I'm guessing that Fabregas wanted and still wants a move to Barca, but wants to do it with honour and dignity, and not while Barca is behaving towards him like a dog trying to steal a bone.

  8. fabregas could have spoken out much earlier to save all this speculation
of ' will l or wont l' move to barcelona.
as a supporter for over 65 years of arsenal, l have never known such outrageous
behaviour from a club requesting a player be transferred to them.
from the barcelona president past and new, from the players each individually
unprofressionally requesting fabregas to move to spain, is unheard of.
fabregas signed a long term contract, and he has 5 more years left.
the amount of £30 million from barcelona was low at todays prices. then you have to ask yourself, have they got the money, as the club seems to be in dire financial straights. its all a big mess. l think they owe mr wenger a big apology for unsettling
a player, the captain of arsenal,so near to the new season in the premier league.

  9. There was no chance of Cesc going with Barcelona behaving in such a manner. Their plan was to drive Cesc away from Arsenal and make it impossible for him to come back after the World Cup. Obviously they failed. They are a disgrace, and I expect Arsenal to pursue legal proceedings against them.

I would love to see the boy Cesc in a Barcelona shirt. He is quite truly one of the best young players in the world currently playing for the 3rd best team in England. Surely Arsenal can't begrudge him a return to his boyhood club and currently the best team in Spain.

it's the first time, i think, arsense played off transfer speculations with regards to his players. Over the past years i watched Arsenal's transfer, mr. wenger doesnt mind the departure of big named players from the time of Henry's great days

  16. If he joins Barca now where will they play him if Xavi, Iniesta and co are fit? These guys are at the very top of their game so he has to really think about whether this is the right time. No one can blame him for wanting to play for Barca, who wouldnt? Its not only the best club in the world but its also his hometown. He must move when its the right time for himself and not be used as some sort of political pawn by some attention seeking football president. The growth of this player has been well documented and admired since he began breaking records for Arsenal and i just hope it continues in the best way for us his fans and for himself the player.

From Steven, on Fri 6 Aug 11:43
  17. All those Barcelona players who were making noises for Fabregas to join them,my advise is if they so desparately want him they should all forgo a year,s wages and add it to the 30m Barca is offering and when it adds up to 80m then they come and talk sense to Arsenal rather than their idiotic behaviour.

Welcome back fabregas. Though your return was against your wish but i doubt if you can give arsenal your best in view of their refusal to let you go. am a man u fan and i believe their refusal to let you is a blessing to you How would you have coped with you always on the bench and you have seen it yourself. At the moment, you cant displace Xavi Henandez and you can only play a limited role. Xavi is miles ahead of you in terms of quality. Wait for another good two years when age would have counted on Xavi. No doubt, you will have a regular jersey at arsenal but would not win recognised trohies except for emirates and the likes. I advise you endure forever.
With wenger still in charge couple with his rigid philophy, arsenal can not win anything respectable under Wenger
