Third-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia angrily answered jokes about his physical condition by picking apart American Andy Roddick 6-2 6-3 3-6 7-6 to reach the semi-finals of the US Open.
Australian Open champion Djokovic, who complained about stomach, hip, ankle and breathing problems during a five-set win in the previous round, dismantled Roddick in the first two sets and pounced on a mistake in the fourth to advance.
"Obviously Andy was saying that I have 16 injuries in the last match so obviously I don't, right?" an annoyed Djokovic said courtside, referring to comments Roddick made in his courtside interview after the fourth round.
"That's not nice anyhow to say in front of this crowd that I have 16 injuries and I am faking it."
The Serb's remarks brought jeers from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd that had openly cheered for US favourite Roddick and rooted against the third seed.
Djokovic took his displeasure out on eighth-seeded Roddick from the start, blunting the American's best weapon -- his serve -- with a brilliant return display to begin rallies where his superior groundstrokes paid off.
The 21-year-old Djokovic broke Roddick three times in the first set, going 3-for-3 on break points, and claimed the second set with lone break to seize a 5-3 lead.
Roared on by his home-country crowd, Roddick came alive in the third set, capturing his first break for a 3-1 lead, then ending it with a love-game exclamation mark of four aces.
Roddick, 26, was up a break and two points away from forcing a fifth set, serving at 5-4, 30-15 when he delivered two double faults that gave Djokovic an unexpected breakpoint.
Djokovic masterfully converted it with a backhand topspin lob and sent the set to a tiebreaker.
The 21-year-old Serb reached match point in the fourth-set decider after Roddick's attempt at a backhand drop shot failed to clear the net. Djokovic clinched victory when the American hit his service return long to end it 7-5.
Djokovic advanced to a scintillating semi-final against number two Roger Federer, who beat qualifier Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
The other men's semi-final has top-seeded world number Rafael Nadal of Spain facing British sixth seed Andy Murray. Roddick told reporters later than he had been joking about Djokovic faking injuries.
"It was completely meant in jest," said 2003 winner Roddick, who joked to reporters that anthrax and SARS could be future complaints from the Serb.
"I don't think I was over the line," said Roddick. "I'm sorry he felt that way. Maybe I did him a favour tonight."

jammycritter: Serbs didn't rape anybody. Serbs were just defending them self against Croatians and muslims. But you can believe anybody you want. Its fact that thousands Serbs were killed in Croatia and hundreds of thousands were kicked out of their homes. iT WAS A ETHNIC CLEANSING. Also over a million Serbs died in nazi croatians concentration camps during world War II. But nobody sees that. But GOD see everything.HE is gonna decide who guilty and who not
I don't like mixing sport and politics but the whole whole world knows that the Serbs are war mongering fanatics who've raped and killed thousands of innocent civilians in the war with Croatia. I fear for Roddicks safety
marijana, the quiet voice of hope.
Why the heck did Djokovic apologize for ? what a sissy... i thought Djoko had more balls than that... he was right in the first place, roddick and robredo are piece of sh it human beings who don't know how to lose properly.... and that wasn't a joke! how retarded do u have to be to admit that it was a joke ? it was a direct attack at the serb... his first reaction was moderate and inconclusive , but because he got booed for it, he chickened out and apologized ... get some backbone Nole... don't let the retarded, racist and intolerant crowd at the us open push & bully u around, like they do with everyone else ! ... face them, make them regret, show them the corrupt system of values they praise !!
Djoko, Fed, Jankovic show them what true champions are ! show them they're roddick, blake, williams are @#$% and worthless !!!
So.. I'm from Serbia, and I understand tat people here don't like Americans, The British, etc. Also you must understand that we were in war with Croatia, so it needs time to make things better between this two nations. But, I think that time was passed and we have to left that bad things behind us, and move on. Specially, we can't mix politics and sport. Nole is a good player, but you have to admit, that he is permanently injured. That simply isn't way to reach No1.
And, if you want to put your comments on the international site you can't use your national language. That is not polite. And it isn't thrue that Croatia don't have good sports. What is about hadball?!
go on Nole... kick their @#$%...
Djokovic is the best !
duna ko....my sympathy is with you. nole deserves an applause....but did you watch the game especially the end part?....nole shook hands but avoided a look on roddicks eye and shook hands with the ref first before his deafeated opponent. the winner usually allows the loser to shake hands with the ref first before him as a good gesture. nole wanted his disgust noticed....watch how he exagerrated his victory on the court, the OA chest thumping. self thumb pointing and on the floor which MAY mean (in your backyard guys)...(i did this in your backyard with your hero)......these acts just fueld the animosity. nadal got heckeled too when playing against another american during the play but nadal simply has a class act after a the match, just his usual despite so much opposition......novak should learn from this including the entire entourage
This is sad!why in every aspect of our lifes there has to be politics!I am sick of it!I like tennis, and this just ruins it for me!i am very sad cause politics and prejudice were present after the Roddick-Nole showdown!I still don't know why he wasn't rewarded for his win with and applause??????instead he got boooed for standing up forhimself???
Real nice behaviour NY! Where is sport and good time in all of this????
IDEMO NOLE DO KRAJA!

Hi there Jim. Thanks for your match post. I clearly missed the most interesting part. Should be good tennis in the semis and final. Look forward to reading your posts. CHEERS
jimwont986, I like your analysis of the Andy/Nole game... unfortunately, in the meantime, you got involved in the political discussion. I understand, it is difficult to stay out of it, I also made a couple of comments on the sportmanship issue, which, strictly speaking, is not a tennis subject. So, I would suggest that we all stick to tennis and make the comments in the direction you tried to set earlier today... this is definitely not a political forum and political discussion just spoil the fact that we are going to watch four good (maybe even the best at the moment) tennis players in the semi-finals of US Open.
Thanks Hanna, that's really nice of you. I enjoy your posts too. Please keep it up, don't let them stop you. I got a bit angry today but I guess I have a right to defend this space, a bit on behalf of all of us like Helen, Rhymes, Pitic etc. who want to talk about tennis without abuse. GO!!
lol.. many stupid guys talk about politics here. Here, i copied from Matt Cronin's expert pick, match analysis Jankovic vs Elena: "Give Jankovic this: she came into the tournament constantly complaining about being out of shape but still has managed to reach the semis. Like her countryman Novak Djokovic, she seems more comfortable competing when she's distracted by physical ailments. Even though she's only 23, she's a much more experienced player now and almost never hits herself out of a match."
Underline message: like his countryman Djokovic, both are more comfortable competing when distracted by physical ailment. Whether they fake it or not, it's their problem.
my point, How could, some one who complained hip, ankle and other injuries in previous match, could be soooo fresh, moved soooo well within a day? either he faked it or not during his match against Robredo, let's see. I bet, during the match against Federer, Djokovic will complain about many injuries too..
enjoy the tennis, guys..
especially nadal has the same gestures......like animal.....they doing it both
when rafa nadal was not still well loved i remember that many would comment and say not nice words about him due to his pre-service ceremonials. its viewed by many as a delay to take few minutes of rest and catch up for his breath...the issue i guess here is about djokovic delaying the game by siting numerous injuries....just like nadal, nole recieved a lot of disapproval on their delaying antics....nadal at one point was made funned of one swedish guy named soderling by immitating nadals pre-service antics while nadal prepares for a serve....obviously it was a joke and nadal got irritated...after that incident we never heard from nadal making it a big deal....this made nadal more adorable from the tennis fun and showed that he is a true gentleman. nadal never showed boastful gestures after the win on the court. nole made jokes too of nadal, sharapova and roddick....but these people were sport and game....roddicks post comment on nole and robredo games was obviouly a joke....lets be true about this fact that in pro tennis medical time outs are permited and being abused by some by complaining multiple injuries to prolong some rest.....nole djokovic is yet to mature.....i believe we all know that. if nole could not take jokes of such nature he should have just kept quiet. noles gestures i believe after the matchpoint simply revealed his personality....
Hi Jimwont986 - you are one of my favorite commentators on this site. It's always a pleasure to read you. Not only are you intelligent and obviously very knowledgeable about this great sport, you also seem to be a really nice person. I myself have stopped commenting here because of all the rubbish that's posted. Not to speak of the despicable racist comments or demonstrations of hate for this or that player - what does this have to do with sport of Tennis? Its disgusting. But there you are: we live in a democracy and freedom of speech is one of our basic rights. The spirit and idea of the Olympic Games was to bring nations together to compete in an atmosphere of friendship and may the best one win. I feel fortunate to be able to live in the Nadal-Federer-Djokovic area: they provide numerous hours of absolute pleasure in watching them and they have inspired an unknown number of youngsters to take up this great sport. This is great! So, why bring in politics, hate and really bad manners into it? Cheers to you and rhymes450: keep up the good work!Hanna43
FINAL: RAFA-NOLE, lastly
Bravo Nole, Najbolji si !!! Roddick ocigledno nije znao da od svih zaraznih bolesti koje je nabrojao, od jedne sigurno nece nikada oboleti, od srpskog inata i velikog srca. Ponosimo se tobom.
