Cana handed Sunderland captaincy

Sat, 05 Sep 08:18:11 2009

Albania international Lorik Cana has been appointed Sunderland's new captain.

The 24-year-old, a £5million signing from Marseille, will take over from Dean Whitehead as skipper following his departure for Stoke, which was closely followed by that of stand-in Danny Collins, also to the Britannia Stadium.

"I think anybody who's watched him will understand why I have made him captain of the club," Bruce told the Sunderland Echo.

"Some people might raise their eyebrows and think, 'He's a foreign player', but he speaks the language perfectly well, he leads by example, he's a good age, he's got experience, he captains his country and he's captained his old club in Marseille."

Cana has made a big impact since his summer move to the Stadium of Light, forging a combative central midfield partnership with fellow newcomer Lee Cattermole.

Sean A, I was referring to the times when you weren't champions, the times when you were almost relegated out of it.
You’re young so I'll explain. Sunderland hasn’t actually spent that many seasons in the top flight and in the late eighties, actually went down to the 3rd division. In the seventies you only had one season in the top flight, to get relegated.
Then their was the monkey's heed era, all a bit embarrassing if you want to pass yourselves off as a big club, it would take a bit of explaining don't you think?

PWilson, consistent premiere league side, lets look at it then.
You beat Bolton, a good result at the time, but now it appears so is everyone else. You got murdered off Chelsea (much to the surprise of a lot of SMB's?)
You beat Blackburn but were very lucky to get anything out of that game at all but granted, a win is a win, and you showed your true colours and quality against Stoke.
We on the other hand are taking the pi55 out of this championship so far, I can't understand how your lot struggle so much when your in it?

"admitting" he's putting together a good consistent Premier league side, which leaves all of it's neighbors in its wake, whilst they languish in the lower leagues, with little more than 11 pro's on the books(desperately trying to avoid injuries -before they even get to October). are ya!!!
