Elias wins tragic San Marino Moto2

Toni Elias won the Moto2 San Marino Grand Prix but the race was marred by a shocking crash in which Shoya Tomizawa sustained fatal injuries.
Suter's Tomizawa was travelling at full speed when he fell off on a corner and was hit violently by the bikes of Alex De Angelis and Scott Redding, who both also tumbled but looked relatively unhurt.
Redding underwent treatment at the Misano medical centre, while De Angelis miraculously walked away.
The race continued, despite the protests of television commentators who said it should be stopped.
It was Elias's fourth consecutive win and moved him a step closer to the championship as his nearest title rival Andrea Iannone suffered mechanical trouble and retired having been handed a ride-through penalty for jumping the start.
Julian Simon finished second and moves to second in the points standings, with Thomas Luthi an impressive third after starting 15th on the grid.

There is no doubt in my mind that with two riders lying prone, one on the circuit and one off the track but on the outside of a corner, the race should have been stopped immediately, to allow expert medical aid to be administered prior to moving the casualty. There can be no excuse for allowing this race to continue. It brought back terrible memories of a previous racer losing his life when his broken body was uncerimoniously scooped up and taken to the side of the track. The safety of the riders and marshals should be of paramount importance and overrule the continuation of a race. My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the riders involved and of course their family and friends. A sad day for motor sport
