Serbia's Jelena Jankovic celebrated her imminent return to the top of the world rankings with an easy 6-4 6-3 victory over Nadia Petrova in the Stuttgart Grand Prix final.
Second seed Jankovic, who will replace Serena Williams as world number one on Monday, took advantage of regular errors from the unseeded Russian Petrova to clinch victory in 83 minutes.
Petrova, champion at the indoor hardcourt event in 2006, played aggressively but was never able to match the consistency of Jankovic, who took the first set thanks to a single break in the Russian's opening service game.
Petrova lost her serve early in the second, too. She broke back for 3-3 but a desperate backhand wide gave Jankovic the advantage straight back and she stormed through to win a second successive title after last week's victory in Beijing.
"That's two titles in two weeks and I'm back up to number one so obviously things are going pretty well for me now,"
Jankovic, who gets to choice between prize money of £55,000 or a Porsche car, said.
Petrova's afternoon was summed up by the final game.
Serving to stay in the match, she planted an easy volley about a metre long to go 0-15 down. She was then wrong-footed by a Jankovic backhand that flew past her for 0-30.
Petrova wafted a crosscourt forehand well long to give Jankovic three match points and handed over the first of them with an awful approach that hit the top of the net.
Jankovic had not had to do anything spectacular; just keep getting the ball back and wait for the inevitable error.
"I went for every single point and tried everything," Petrova said courtside. "I just made too many unforced errors and the key to playing Jelena is to be consistent."

"One of major doubts and discussions about if JJ deserves or can be named as the no. 1 of women tennis is that she never (so far) wins any one of Grand Slams. But see, Kim Clijsters and Amile Mauresmo were also the no. 1 before they won Grand Slam. JJ's performance is very consistent, namely, no big ups and downs. For JJ, it's just the matter of time to win Grand Slam."
I agree. When all those who object acctually do something with their own lives, then their opinion will matter. Maybe.
why did jelena use such unsporting tactics in the semi final
40 ana very sad the truth is often hard to bear but it is all there on the video recording for all to see
llorretta, you must be a sad alcoholic yourself to write an imbecile comment like that, insulting both Jelena and her mother in one breath, pathetic.
very different situation next at Kremlin Cup Moscow
VERY efficient organisation will enforce the correct rules on/off court``.. congratulations
very very sad jelena had to resort to blatant cheating in semi final with courts side illegal coaching
screaming abuse at her opponent by her followers among the spectators
comments from mother drunk from continual swigs from her Vodka bottle
amost disgraceful disgusting performance throughout-- should have been defaulted rapidly
Citat from Nivas86:
"you downers who can't appreciate hard work do something by yourselves? i bet you can't beat venus even in a video game the way jelena did here in semis. give her some respect for being the best player at the moment. she wasn't even in half form at US open than she's now and she yet reached finals. if it was now, she would have a grand slam title. the truth is she wouldn't be in top of tennis world if she wasn't good. you stay there for long if you are not good even if you get there. so all you lazy downers go try to do something productive and if you are just a one hundredth part as good as jelena is when she's on top of her game you gotta feel happy"
bravo Nivas ! This is the point !

ALISON MERRITT ... LOL that's true. Commentator said Jelena's mother always drinks bit of water when ever Jelena wins pt, and she never took single drop when Jelena lose her pts. If u look closely u would see it's true, i find it very funny. :D
SO WELL DONE JJ ON WINNING IN STUTTGART.
NO MORE ANTICS PLEASE IT WASN'T NICE AGAINST VENUS WILLIAMS YESTERDAY.
I AM A JJ FAN BUT THINK HER MOTHER IS GIVING HER SIGNALS WHEN SHE DRINKS FROM HER BOTTLE WHEN JJ WINS GOOD POINT OR GAME.LOOK OUT FOR IT FANS
ANYWAY THAT SAID NO MORE DRAMA PLEASE JJ.
ALISON MERRITT.
Jankovic didn't won Moscow event. She didn't even play in Moscow last year so she is not defending single point from Moscow, she was in Bangkok at that time and lost in first round so she has no pts to defend. But showing up in Moscow she will ghet bonus 70 pts to just start the game (because she is free in first round), and other players must defend their pts that they earned last year (like Safina semifinal and Williams final) if they want to catch 1st place bu the end of the year.
Like I said Jankovic won 3 major events (Rome 2 times, and Charleston)
neboy 34 thanks for your assistance
please tell us when she won Moscow event date/name thanks
Try doing a search on the words TENNIS and MAJORS and you will get plenty of hits referring to the slams as "the 4 majors" and none referring to ATP Masters or WTA Tier 1 events as such.
Loretta, you asked for a list of Serena's wins. This year she has won Bangalore (tier2), Miami (teir 1), Charleston (tier 1) and of course the US Open (Grand Slam).
Like I said to (comment 31) Jankovic won 3 major events... She never won GS
ROME for example is a MAJOR EVENT with ranking points accordingly
BUT it is not a GRAND SLAM event of which there are only 4
peruse your WTA yearbook more thoroughly dear
for Major tennis tournaments are count masters as well as grand slams, otherwise u could only say "Jankovic never won Grand Slam" an don't need to use term "major" because there is no need for that.
For major tournaments in tennis WTA or ATP there is more then 4 tournaments in year... I count them all before.
bobito 36 you write nonsense back to front
first GRAND SLAM events {4}
2nd MAJOR tier 1 events
3rd == tier 2 events
& so on etc
each category receives less & less ranking points , just read your WTA year book again
thanks for neboy 34 info
now please give us a list for fat serena too
you say Dinara Safina reached semi final last year, thanks for info
Well good wishes to be a finalist this time
All on home ground
Sorry neboyshac, but you are incorrect. In tennis the word "major" is always taken to mean the grand slams. It is never used to describe other, less prestigious tournaments.
