Serie A - Mutu fine suspended by Swiss court

Eurosport - Mon, 05 Oct 23:37:00 2009

A Swiss court has temporarily suspended Adrian Mutu's fine for testing positive for cocaine and being sacked by Chelsea five years ago.

Serie A 2009-10 Fiorentina Adrian Mutu - 0

In July, the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a FIFA ruling that the Romania striker had to pay 17.17 million euros in damages to the English club but Mutu appealed to a Swiss federal court.

"The suspension of the fine is a positive decision for Mutu but it is still not time to party as there is a lot to do," the Fiorentina forward's agent Victor Becali told Italy's Sky television.

"The suspension lasts until November, then the court could ask for other documents and the case will proceed. We hope Adrian doesn't have to pay."

Mutu has said he does not have the funds to pay the huge fine and Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli has been careful not to overplay him this season given his emotional plight.

  1. Kevin K are u retarded??? Juventus bought this guy on a FREE!!! they made a bloody 17 million profit coz thats what Chelsea sacrificed.....and Chelsea have always had a zero tolerance policy on drugs (and i admire them for that)......i rather never have to be associated with a Rio Ferdinand like druggie or Cantona like karate kid in my team history.....im happy with Chelsea sacking him and incase u dont knw...the original fine was much smaller than this....but that idiot Mutu and his lawyers appealed and the fine increased greatly.....not Chelsea's fault ....the CAS increased the fine in tune with FIFA... u think Abramovich will care abt some few more million??? I think u need to brush ur history on this case....as for Mutu getting reprimanded for this....thats a disgrace...he broke his contract by using drugs....in any sport thats an offense and even in olympics and all people have been stripped of their medals ......u dont hear people crying there then....why??? Coz its common sense that sports and drugs should never go together.....did Chelsea force him to have drugs??? He signed a contract which clearly forbidded him from having drugs...now if u wanna go and breach it.....pay for it....and not just him.. Juventus must share this fine too.....sends a loud and clear message to all u druggies.....and no u do not deserve a second chance in life....in normal people's life at offices and all....one bad error and u get ur career terminated.......why should these rich playboys get 2 or more chances unless ofcourse Mutu is illiterate and couldnt read the drug clause......bloody idiot!

  2. The fact that he was sucked by chelsea means the club weren't interested in his services anymore. There was nothing like Mutu failed to play for the club and after showing no support to the guy after being banned they claim for compensation. Look at the way Ferdinand was treated at Man U. Isnt he delivering now? I think Chelsea is just being greedy here and unfair. They dropped him thinking that he wouldn't come back lively. They made a very big mistake. It was very selfish of CFC. We are all humans who need a chance in life when we go wrong.

  3. Many people are still missing the point of this whole episode - Mutu breached his contract with Chelsea by being caught doing drugs - they had paid a transfer fee for him which they had no compensation for when he "paid his dues" with a laughable short term suspension - any other sport has a mandatory 2 yrs ban. At no stage have CFC asked for 17 million plus - they did seek compensation rightly on the lost fees they paid while other clubs had the "benefit" of Mutu playing for them. The size of the fine was decreed by a Court - not CFC. Eventually Mutu will have to pay something as a fine but it will be nowhere near 17mill

  4. Sorry but this is absolutely ridicolous. So the lad is a footballer and he did a bit of coce. And now he has to pay 17 millon. Rio Ferdinand used drugs and he had to pay fu.ck all.

  7. 17.17 million euros??? from a PLAYER... he is not Real Madrid, he is a ROMANIAN guy... how can they be this cruel to him.... how could he have that much... (i think he has some gangster, maffia romanian friends, they will pay it) ;)

  8. The fine is too big..... but CFC did lose his services and shouldn't be made to pay for Mutu's mistakes. He cost them a fortune and they got virtually nothing. An appropriate percentage of that signing on fee would seem appropriate.

  9. 17.17 million, eh? Could've got two Vermaelen's for that.

There's no way Mutu has that much. They've got to reduce the fine.
