World Cup qual. - United explain Foster absence

Eurosport - Mon, 05 Oct 12:23:00 2009

Manchester United keeper Ben Foster has been ruled out of England's World Cup double-header against Ukraine and Belarus with a chest injury.

2009-2010 Manchester United Ben Foster - 0

The FA did not specify Foster's injury when the squad was released on Sunday night, but now United have confirmed the 26-year-old is being "investigated" for an injury sustained during Saturday's 2-2 draw with Sunderland, although not serious enough to prevent him completing the match.

Conspiracy theorists had suggested an injury was merely the excuse for omitting Foster when the decision had been taken on the grounds of form.

Foster has been blamed for Sunderland's second goal at Old Trafford, when Kenwyne Jones showed more strength in an aerial duel.

This came two weeks after what Sir Alex Ferguson described as a "difficult" afternoon against Manchester City, when Foster was blamed for two goals, losing the ball to Carlos Tevez for Gareth Barry's opener, then going down far too quickly for Craig Bellamy's second equaliser.

In between, Foster did keep a clean sheet at Stoke, although he was also left out of matches against Wolves and Wolfsburg as Tomasz Kuszczak was given an opportunity.

  1. I hear some people say 'give Foster a chance' - ermmmm, HELLO! He's played in every game since VDS got injured which has been a fair few and every game he has played in , bar 1, we have conceded goals due Foster's lack of vision, skill and sometimes pure lazyness! Every time the ball goes near him, a shivver goes right down my spine lol. The majority of United fans have no faith in him whatsoever and as far as 'Foster for the England squad goes' - I would rather see a keeper in one of the lower leagues playing in goal. Kuszczak to me, seems a lot more confident in goal and put on a good performance against Wolfsburg. I think we maybe need to give him a chance to shine!

  2. Fergie's raging fury probably led him on giving Foster a 'CLASSIC UPPERCUT' on the chest, sneaking in unsuspectedly beyond the preying eyes....

  4. foster is young and people need to be patient. He's an excellent instinctual shot stopper, he just falls short when he has too much time to think.ie back passes, long balls, craig bellamy. etc! Also being afraid of making another mistake will make u shaky too. He sorts that out and he'll be a class act. Give him a chance - the season has hardly started yet...

  5. Wouldn't let him keep goal for ManUnited let alone England. Simply not good enough. Highly over-rated. He makes Taibi looks like Peter Schmeichel.

  6. mmmmmmmmmmm whats the reason he really isnt there?
Fergie doesnt want to lose this keeper as Van De Sar is injured!!!!!

  7. He is constantly making mistakes, really wanted him to nail the number 1 jersey at United but he is just not good enough. Think the fact that he is English has meant fergie has (for some reason) given him more chances than he deserves. Taibi, Bosnich, Howard, Carroll were not forgiven for high profile mistakes so not exactly sure why Foster keeps getting second chances. Kzsucack(?!) should be given the nod till the return of VDS then United need to look elsewhere. I think Robert Green from the Struggling West Ham would be perfect.

  12. as i said 7 or 8 weeks before he is not that one who can make clean sheets,he is just a shaky,low minded,overrated keeper.just look at his former clubs;
Racing Club Warwick,Tiverton Town,Stafford Rangers,Kidderminster Harriers and Wrexham
i can't believe it,he is playing for united after that horrible mistakes in manchester derby.I am really want to know who will be the keeper in next games, this moron who costs us points & cups,or kuszczak with 2 clean sheets out of 2 appearances?i think we must keep edwin until his retirement and after his era we need someone like Rene Adler,Manuel Neuer or Igor Akinfeev.

  16. Foster is the worsed goal keeper that i have ever seen in Oldtrafford since 1986 that i have been a fan of United. He compounds the problem of the back 4 players.Fergie must do something about Foster's goal keeping errors or United will be 5th at the log by the time Edwin Van Der SAL returns from injury. Also,Fergie should please buy the Russian keeper by january because even Kuzsak is not good enough but he is definitely better than Foster, this is my observation but the coach knows better.Foster must be dropped from first team,he is too nervous to be a United keeping, full of mistakes and always in a hurry as if his brains are switched off.Capello,if you wish England well,Foster must not be called up for Worldcup because,i believe that England deserves better keeper than Foster,he makes me sick each time i see him starting a game for united or in the bench.

  19. On reading some of the rubbish on this page,I wonder why some of the aces giving their views have not challenged Fergie for the manager's job? Do they see Foster in training as much as Fergie,do they know what it's like to play at OT with 75000 criticising their every move, come to think of it-have any of them ever played football or any other sport? United fans have more reason to be happy with their team and its succes than any supporters on earth. If you want to whinge, please go and support anyone other than the residents of Anfield,Stamford Bridge and The Emirates. most of the rest must often be suicidal!

  20. I wouldnt let ben foster keep the score at cricket match. he is @#$%. koszluk isnt the best keeper in the world but i would much rather see him between the sticks. someone remind me how many goals he let in when he was at watford. He can make some cracking saves like he did against arsenal and spurs but he makes more errors than saves. i hope edwin is back for the next game and stays fit until january and then we can buy a decent keeper.
