Giro d'Italia - Giro organisers reveal Denmark stages

Wed, 05 Oct 11:44:00 2011

Organisers of the 2012 Giro d'Italia have revealed details of the opening three stages, which will be held in Denmark as the race takes in Scandinavia for the first time.

2011 Giro Alberto Contador - 0

The opening stage on May 5 is a circular time trial of 8.7 kilometres in the city of Herning.

The second stage on the following day begins and ends in Herning, with the 206km route heading along the west coast amid picturesque sand dunes. That flat stage will be highly affected by wind.

Then the 198 riders from 22 teams move to Horsens, where the 190km third stage on May 7 begins and ends - taking in the Horsens Fjord and also a 14km loop of the heart of that city. There are also the Ejer Bavnehøj and Yding Skovhøj hills to negotiate on that day.

Joachim Andersen, president of the local organising committee, said: "The riders are not only in for a challenging terrain, they will also become acquainted with beautiful scenery and enthusiastic crowds of spectators along the road."

The Giro runs from May 5 to 27. The full route will be announced in mid-October.

  1. Why the hell would Giro starts in Denmark??? Such a big disgrace!! Giro should start and end in its original country Italy. Denmark can have Tour of Denmark if they want, but please don't destroy the last exciting cycling event.

  7. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

    Dear Nhj Bert,
Why don't you display your obvious intellect to the masses and explain yourself further? A visionary like yourself must have such an amazing insight that it needs to be explained to common folk like myself.
That is, of course, if you can do it before you comment is hidden due to low rating. Otherwise you're just a blathering idiot.
