Champions League - Team of the week: Cesc leads the way

Eurosport - Thu, 05 Nov 10:35:00 2009

Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas leads the way as matchday four of the Champions League drew another clutch of stellar performances.

2009-10 Champions League Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas scores against AZ Alkmaar - 0

GK: Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow) - Despite letting in three goals against Manchester United, Akinfeev pulled off some stunning saves that could seal his move to Old Trafford.

RB: Gary Neville (Manchester United) - Who needs David Beckham? G-Nev emulated his old mate by raining cross after cross down into the CSKA box as United completed another irresistible comeback.

CB: Cesar Navas (Rubin Kazan) - After their historic win in Barcelona, the Spanish defender was key in denying the European champions more than a point in the reverse fixture back in Russia.

CB: Lucio (Internazionale) - The veteran Brazilian got off to a bad start in Italy, but his solid display at the back for Inter helped end their abysmal European run.

LB: Aly Cissokho (Lyon) - Cissokho gave great support down the flank for Lyon as he showed up fill-in right-back Jamie Carragher and fired in several troublesome crosses.

RM: Jesus Navas (Sevilla) - He may go to pieces when he leaves Andalucia, but Navas's incredible home performances continue for Sevilla, and he deserved his goal against Stuttgart.

CM: Zvjezdan Misimovic (Wolfsburg) - Scored a cracker and pulled the strings in midfield as the Wolves secured a 3-0 win at Besiktas that put them second in Group B.

CM: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal) - The Gunners skipper seems to be a regular in our Champions League XIs, and his well-taken brace against AZ Alkmaar makes him a sure pick yet again.

LM: Andrei Arshavin (Arsenal) - Fabregas may have netted twice against AZ, but his crafty Russian team-mate laid on three assists as the Gunners tore the Dutch champions apart.

FW: Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid) - Their season may have got off to an awful start, but El Kun's stunning double from the bench against Chelsea shows he could soon be taking the Europa League by storm.

FW: Didier Drogba (Chelsea) - Back in Europe with a bang. The Drog was simply unplayable as he ran the Atletico defence ragged.

  10. 4 games involving Premier League sides out of the 16 games played. Is there any surprise that EnglishSport has picked 7 players out of these 4 games (i.e. a game involving an English side)? How about Niang in the Marseille demolition of Zurich, or Vargas in the demolition of Debrecen, or Sneijder for virtually winning the game for Inter (goal and an assist to win 2-1) and moving Inter from bottm to the top of the table? I'm sure if an English team demolished a side you would pick 1 player from their squad at least...wait a minute...Arsenal demolished AZ and you picked 2 players! What a coincidence...
Now i think that both Fabregas and Arshavin fully deserve to be there, but what about the fellas i mentioned above? Maybe for the sake of fairness you could take out a player from an English game and select one who just may deserve it more. Even if it comes at the expense of one of the dynamic duo in Arsenal because there was equally great play by Vargas and Sneijder? Maybe even Zambrotta as the LB choice? After all, the game was pretty entertaining and Zambrotta played very good.
I'm not saying any of the guys you selected don't deserve their spots, but there are players who played equally as well in other games and rather than clumping up the first 11 mostly from players involved in an English game you could next time select players from other games too?
    Just a suggestion...

Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool have no chance in winning the CL Cup this year. Chelsea is the only English team that has a chance to compete till the end. I would love to see a final confrontation between AC Milan-Chelsea. AC Milan 1 Chelsea 0 Pato will score the goal and Dinho will assist. THIAGO SILVA WILL BE BEST DEFENDER OF THE TOURNMENT.
