Premier League - Hines strike gives Hammers win

Eurosport - Tue, 03 Nov 12:11:00 2009

Youngster Zavon Hines stepped off the bench to score with just seconds remaining to give struggling West Ham a valuable 2-1 win over 10-man Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Mark Noble gave the Hammers a first-half lead from the spot in stoppage time after Habib Beye - later sent off - was judged to have brought down Hines, who had come on for the injured Carlton Cole.

Ashley Young made amends for a second-half penalty miss of his own with a superb strike from the corner of the box for Villa, but the Hammers would not be denied.

In the dying moments Scott Parker found Hines who struck to send the home fans crazy and pull his club out of the bottom three.

The Hammers' early game plan went out of the window when Herita Ilunga's night was cut short with just six minutes on the clock.

Despite the early change - Jonathan Spector came on for the home side - Noble almost opened the scoring after turning James Collins, only to find away keeper Brad Friedel equal to the effort.

West Ham counterpart Robert Green then pulled off a world-class save when he tipped over Stiliyan Petrov's ferocious drive before saving a Gabriel Agbonlahor strike.

When West Ham lost the talismanic Cole, playing against his former club, to what looked like a hamstring injury, Zola immediately sent on Hines.

And after Green saved John Carew's scuffed snapshot, the sub won his side a penalty: the decision looked harsh on Villa man Beye, who was booked for protesting. Noble rifled home to give the hosts a half-time lead.

Villa were fired up and should have levelled four minutes after the restart when Manuel da Costa was penalised in the box for climbing on Collins, but Young's resulting spot kick was superbly saved by Green.

Young waited just three minutes before making amends. There seemed nothing on for the England man as he picked up the ball on the corner of the box, but he unleashed an unstoppable curling effort that flew past Green and into the net.

Hines almost replied for West Ham with a header that went over the bar and Parker just failed to get a touch on Julien Faubert's pass, which trickled agonisingly wide of Friedel's post.

With the clock running down, Spector attacked the Villa defence and when Beye brought his run to a halt, the referee had no hesitation in stopping play and brandishing a second yellow despite West Ham's protests for advantage to be played.

It looked like the Hammers' best chance had gone after Friedel pushed away Parker's effort; but with four minutes of stoppage time played, Parker skipped into the Villa box, dug the ball out to Hines and he produced an excellent close-range finish.

  5. It's great that homegrown talent like Hines turns out to be the real hero, not all your bought in expensive sideliners, and they are stil talking about going after yet more unproven 'strikers'. Strenghthen the DEFENCE first, especially if UPSON is going to be off this Xmas.
WHEN OH WHEN are they going to DUMP DUXBURY, that self serving SHEISTER has cost Hammers millions of wasted money. Curbs has proved his case, that he was double crossed by Duxbury. SACK DUXBURY!!!

When I first saw the odds, I can not put myself to believe a bottom table team can beat one of the best team on top. Tell me the F.A. Don't play any part, 1st was a penalty to make things easier for West Ham, then 3 yellow cards to Aston to make things look clean later, Yes, and when the time comes, out came the "RED". "6" mins after 90, West Ham scored 2-1 and the picture is complete! WELL DONE, F.A. you've done it again!
