Premier League - Kroenke close to Arsenal deal

Reuters - Thu, 05 Nov 09:45:00 2009

American sports mogul Stan Kroenke has raised his stake in Arsenal to 29.9 per cent, the threshold beyond which he will have to make an offer for the remaining shares.

Kroenke, the club's largest shareholder, bought another 200 shares in the Premier League club at a price of £8,500 per share, Arsenal Holdings PLC said in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.

Arsenal said 100 of those shares were sold by chairman Peter Hill-Wood.

Kroenke had raised his stake to 29.6 percent on Tuesday.

Arsenal, currently third in the Premier League, have been the subject of takeover speculation since Kroenke and Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov began building stakes in the club.

Usmanov owns around 25 percent of the club's shares.

  1. just a thought, if the shareholders were to reject the income received from dividends on their shares, how much would that ring in to pay off the building debt ? That would surely speed up the debt payment, and therefore make the club a truely profitable organisation. From there on, the world is at your feet. Gunner for everlasting life.

  2. arsene wenger doesnt spend the money he is supposed to have because he doesnt actually have it they just rather say that than admit we dont actually have any spare money to buy players, without selling other ones. I do have faith in arsene wenger but he can only do so much with what he hasand i dont like to say it but i dont thonk that he has qiute enough at the mo o win the things we should and could be.

  4. What the problem with a take over we need this more then ever we can't afford to lose players when there peaking we lost ashly cole over 5Grand at the time he was the best wing back in the world. Look barcelona in the past have rob us blind because of the power of money . We have a strong team what needs a goalkeeper center half plus man utds 12 man the ref then will have to increase the emirates coz there won't be no space on the wall of fame

  5. arsenal f.c have always been run in an efficient manner, they have never gone above their means in terms of running a business. indeed even the stadium project was handled in a superb manner, in that they found a sponsor willing to pay one hundred million pounds sterling for the naming rights of the stadium. they took out a mortgage to finance it, which is being payed back through the operating profits of the club, with money put aside for possible future purchases of new players. i think that arsenal are one of the only clubs in the whole of europe to be making money from the sales of players, and player purchasing. arsene wenger is a superb manager, he will only spend if he needs to and he allways seems to pull off some brilliant transfers in terms of quality and value for money. i can't imagine the marinhos the furgusons benitez or any other manager anywhere in europe acheiving what he has with the cash he has spent, personally i would rather win trophies this way, rather than spend spend spend for instant success, wheres the satisfaction in that? so if mr american takes power of this great football club, take a step back and leave the running of the club to the experts, and you won't go far wrong.!! chelsea man utd liverpool take a look at how the arsenal do it and learn that buying succsess earns very little self satisfaction or respect. gunner for life. fromm big abbo.

  6. Hannah418 (comment 17) - I don't think it matters how much money Wenger is given to spend, he chooses not to spend the money. So the only way that Kroenke is going to spend hundreds of millions on players is if he sacks Wenger and employs a manager who just buys top players without a concern of how they will fit together as a team. No, in my opinion, Kroenke buying out the remaining shares and throwing multi-millions at the club will not be a good thing. Have faith in Arsene Wenger and he will bring us back to those glory days of before!

M H, I think sometimes he hides behind the financial constraints. He is scared to spend coz he often messes up the big deals but gets lauded when one of his (many) stolen youth players makes it. How many youthies do arsenal relesae each year? He best signing in ages (arshavin) only happened because he flew to london himself in desperation to complete the deal!

  8. If any of you ever bothered to read about Arsene Wenger you would know that first and foremost he has a degree in econonmics and he has made it abundantly clear that he does not want to run a successful club (ie makes a profit) into one that's over burdened with debt like others in the premiership. He will not 'buy' a football team - the galacticos system does not work. Too many stars, too many inflated egos.

  10. if it means we get to buy some more players that i think we need to strenghten our squad a bit and maybe get rid of the debt of our new stadium it must be a good thing. I have read he is really well off . Allt eh other share holders keep saying oh we have so much money for arsene to spend but he never spends money with out selling at least one big name player we cant carry on like that for ever will run out of players. Its great what he is doing with the young players and i think with just a little bit more experience we can win trophies like we all want. i say its a good thing

  11. The guy must be aware of the ill feeling of other american owners of EPL clubs. Would it not be a good idea of his "management team" to come out and say exactly what the intentions are ? Either that or an English (newspaper/TV) reporter to ask all the awkward questions we want to hear the answer to. Please Stan, make it known you want to improve the club beyond its current and long term plans.

  12. You mean stay owned by people who were never prepared to advance the club by actually putting money into it - you forget all those people selling shares had owned them for years and years and had either inherited them or bought them for nothing and who were taking hundreds of thousands of pounds every year in dividends. Shut up you know nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
