David Beckham's loan move to Milan means he faces six months away from the family home - and the England midfielder says the absence "kills" him.
The 34-year-old will stay in Italy from January to June before returning to Los Angeles Galaxy after the World Cup in South Africa.
Beckham told Fox Sports Radio he lost money on the same loan move earlier this year but it was being away from his kids that he found toughest.
"The biggest thing for me is I go away and leave my family for six months. They come over and see me for a week every eight weeks," he said.
"Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about my children, about my wife and my family and I hate being away from them. Being away from my family and my children kills me.
"I go and live in Italy and I can't take my family because my boys are settled in school and there is no way that us as parents want to unsettle them."
He said it was his desire to play for England in next year's World Cup that drove him to leave the US for half of the year to play in Serie A, and was aware there was no guarantee he would make Fabio Capello's final squad.
"It's the only reason I am choosing to be away from my family for six months," he said.
"Being in the World Cup squad is not guaranteed, even if I go to Milan it is not guaranteed, but I need to do everything possible to give myself a chance.
"It's always a roller-coaster in my career ... and it is going to be like that for the next six to eight months - but I am looking forward to it," said Beckham.
The former England captain and his Galaxy team play the second leg of their Major League Soccer Western Conference semi-final against local rivals Chivas USA on Sunday. The first leg ended 2-2.

I cannot understand all the vitriolic stuff on this site. David Beckham has been a great ambassador for
English Football, he has a fine family. I do not covet his money and he is entitled to feel a bit homesick if
he feels that way. He should be treated with respect, it looks as though a few guys here are a little jealous
writing here.
I hope he makes the World Cup Squad he is a good bloke to have around.
From Terry.
this post is tacky and tasteless...saying Beckham killed was nt a headline people look for.
michaelserhan1, he said that. They only reported what he said.
to title this, beckham killed ,is disgusting, and should be changed, i will not go on this site again.
Let Beckham stop this hypocrisy. Having sacrificed his family bond on the throne of fame, he shouldn't expect to have the two concurrently. bottom line: no one is forcing him to go on loan to Milan. So no croc tears!
Who Cares! But Guys don't be short sited! there is a lot more money to be maid if he on the squad during the WC than ever! Capello know it and maybe he is on the deal!
beckham is a quality and will lift the team, lets hope he can do well for milan then well for england and then it will be worth it becks, good luck
i think this shows how much it means to him to be in the squad.. englands best crosser by far, deserves his place
Aw poor Davey boy. He lost money but being away from the family hurt more. Youd think himself and the stick insect could scrape together a few bob to fly over and back more often
Beckham comments dont make sense to me. I think he should stay with his family if that kills him!
WELL...GOOD LUCK D.BECKHAM!!
