Sunderland manager Roy Keane has resigned from the club following a dreadful run of form.
Five defeats from their last six Premier League games have seen Sunderland slip to third from bottom in the table and led Keane to decide his future lies away from the club.
The Irishman has walked away from the Stadium of Light following three days of discussions between Keane, chairman Niall Quinn and other advisers.
Ricky Sbragia takes over in a caretaker role, assisted by Dwight Yorke and Neil Bailey.
Quinn said: "Roy deserves huge respect for his contribution and the manner in which he guided the club from the depths of the Championship back to the Premier League.
"His winning mentality and singled mindedness were just what this club needed when Drumaville took over shortly before his arrival.
"Roy's decision to stand aside and allow someone else to take charge of the next chapter sums up his desire to always do what is best for the club. Even in his departure he has been more concerned for the welfare of the players and his staff than himself."
Keane took over in August 2006 after a poor start to the season under temporary boss Quinn, leading the Wearside outfit into the top flight by the season's end.
He voiced his self-doubt last weekend regarding his ongoing suitability for the post after the 4-1 home defeat by Bolton Wanderers which featured an appalling defensive performance.
He said: "I ask myself every day if I'm the right man for Sunderland.
"I asked myself this morning, and I said I was. Sunday morning, if the answer's no, we'll have to look at it."
The 37-year-old spent over £60 million on players in less than two seasons in the Premier League, but summer signings such as Anton Ferdinand, Pascal Chimbonda, El-Hadji Diouf and Steed Malbranque have largely failed to deliver.
Keane was due to hold a regular media conference on Thursday ahead of Sunderland's match against his former club Manchester United on Saturday.
After the visit to Old Trafford, Sunderland face crunch matches against West Bromwich Albion, Hull City and Blackburn Rovers.

For crying out loud man, 'the legend' blew £80 million - all bar one of his 'bargains' is dross admittedly, but £80 million is £80 million. What i want to know is, how come the big plank quinn gets out of this unscathed; after all, he sanctioned the spending spree - a spree that has sent safc hurtling, not only toward the Championship but also towards certain bankruptcy. Keano has done a number on you lot; a number not even your worst enemy could've bettered.
PETER E, Haaland played for Leeds.. you can't even read the article..
I don't think Keane is a bad manager. He did well bringing up Sunderland from the championship. I just don't think he had the tools to work with, or the money available to bring in top class players. Until this changes Sunderland, like the clubs around them will always struggle in the prem regardless of who the manager is.
Rick
So Roy will not tolerate people abusing him " . Wonder if the Man City player Haaland feels the same about being abused. Heaven help Roy if he does.
all you keano haters need to shut your moufs. he brought them up from the bottom of the championship and kept them in the premier league for a second season. not many managers can claim that they did that before turning 40
Keane spent money on players who take the money and run to the next club when they fail, relegation and they move on, its in their contracts. WBA, HULL ,STOKE etc can only sign the cast offs in it for the money, and thats why they struggle to part with the cash on wages for these players which could jeperdise the future of the clubs. I thought Keane was tuff, not no more, he got Sunderland out of the championship and they cannot go any higher up the leagues,he should haved managed the players like he did when he bullied them when he played for Man U as captain and things would have been sorted. If you don,t want Big Sam i would have him tomorrow, he got @#$% on at Newcastle.
Baggies Fan (Mowbray is good but to much of a softy for my liking)

What is the point in dying your hair black, yet having that ridiculous grey in his beard.Keane has lost it....
A toon fan from Kent. no wonder you know so much about football and especially Roy Keane as a player.Being a red from Manchester at least I got to see him ply his trade and you would have given your right arm to see him in a Toon shirt you two faced southern geordie T%*T
After reading through his dossier, and with due recognition of his achievements, I can only say that Roy Keane has an attitude problem (appologies to his loyals).
To Stephen at 231, your prose was like Dylan Thomas. Although I cannot stand Roy I accept his professionalism and that he has fans like you. Good luck
