Pulis left to rue missed chances

Sun 06 Jan, 09:00 PM

Stoke boss Tony Pulis admits the Championship club may have missed their opportunity to knock Newcastle out of the FA Cup after a 0-0 draw. The Potters were the better side in the second half but must now travel for a replay at St James' Park in their bid to add to the problems of Magpies manager Sam Allardyce.

"I thought we were a bit tepid in the first half. The second half was more like us," Pulis told BBC2.

"We got the tempo up and took the game to them. It's desperately disappointing because we had numerous opportunities.

"The chairman will be very pleased. They will be a different proposition at St James' and we know that.

"We had a great opportunity today but I'm very pleased and very proud of the players. The second half was more like us."

The game was played in wet and windy conditions and the Premier League club played precious little football despite some of the illustrious names in their ranks.

"There is no question when there is (Mark) Viduka and (Michael) Owen in the team, and top quality players, that every little helps the team from the lower division," Pulis added.

"You are hoping someone will put one of these opportunities away but, give Newcastle credit, they defended well.

"Every manager up and down the country is under pressure.... Sam is up to his neck in it."
