Championship - Transfer Talk: QPR keep flashing the cash

Eurosport - Sun, 06 Jan 17:37:00 2008

What is it with these football managers? Someone comes in with a big wad of cash and do they try and save it for a rainy day? Of course not. It's all spend, spend, spend.

The biggest of the Championship spenders so far this January have been Queens Park Rangers, who have already shelled out £4 million of their dream trio's money.

Anyone would have thought that names like Shabazz Baidoo, Marc Nygaard and Gareth Ainsworth would be enough to satisfy messers Briatore and Ecclestone. But no!

The next name to join Luigi de Canio's Loftus Road revolution could well be Tottenham winger Wayne Routledge (pictured), even if the £3 million price tag Juande Ramos has slapped on him does seem a tad optimistic. Scratch that. It's just plain stupid!!!

Far more likely to bolster the ranks is former Aston Villa goalkeeper Stefan Postma. The Dutchman, who proved in his time in Birmingham that he is erm... better than Peter Enckleman, is currently playing for Den Haag in his homeland, is available for around £300,000 and was in the stands as his soon-to-be employers lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Another target to bounce back to the Championship is Luton's Matthew Spring, although Crystal Palace are also interested in the midfielder, who could leave for £50k due to the League One side being in administration.

At the sharp end of the table, it's a tale of differing attitudes for the three teams sharing the top spot.

West Bromich Albion - ahead on goal difference - want to make the loan signing of impressive Manchester City striker Ishmael Miller a permanent one, although it may be tough - we all know how much he enjoys his nights out with best mate Micah Richards don't we?

Luton midfielder David Bell is also interesting Tony Mowbray, as well as Leciester, Ipswich and Burnley, although he looks set to lose utility man Ronnie Wallwork to FA Cup giant-killers Huddersfield, where he has been on loan for three months.

Watford, who look set to lose star striker Marlon King to the Premier League, want Luton's Dave Edwards for £700k and another Marlon, Harewood, who has struggled to make an impact at Aston Villa.

Stoke City though, look set to meet Villa's £1.8 million valuation for the striker and will also complete the signing of Derby full-back Andy Griffin for £300k. They are also keen on Preston midfield maestro Simon Whaley - as are Palace - following the sale of Peter Sweeney to League One Leeds.

Promotion-chasing Bristol City have issued a hands-off warning to Portsmouth, who are set to bid £2 million for winger Marvin Elliot. Middlesbrough also want him while goalkeeper Adriano Basso is attracting Premier League sides Birmingham, Wigan and Derby.

Charlton are after a striker and are eyeing up Burnley's Andy Gray for £750k as well as Carlise's Joe Garner and Steve Morison of Blue Square Premier side Stevenage, both of whom would cost half the Scotsman's fee. Bottom side Colchester are also chasing Morison.

Alan Pardew is also keen on long-time Plymouth defender Paul Connolly, but Paul Sturrock probably will not let him go after selling Dan Gosling to Everton for £1.7 million during the week. Former Plymouth boss Ian Holloway is trying to bring his former defender to Leicester.

Ipswich Town midfielder Gary Roberts has fallen out with boss Jim Magilton and is set to be transfer listed on Monday morning, with Leeds and League One leaders Swansea set to launch bids of around £170k for him.

Barnsley have told Northern Ireland international Grant McCann he can leave this week and Yorkshire rivals Scunthorpe are ready to stump up £350k for him. Lucky boy. Barnsley to Scunthorpe. It's all glamour up there.

Coventry striker Leon Best meanwhile, will plead with boss Iain Dowie to allow him to quit the side, with League One Nottingham Forest preparing a £1 million offer.
