Alonso unhurt in plane crash - report

Eurosport - Tue, 06 Jan 11:17:00 2009

Fernando Alonso has escaped unhurt after being in a plane crash in Malindi, Kenya, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

2008 Belgium GP Renault Alonso - 0

Alonso and his family were in the process of taking off around 6pm on Sunday when the private jet touched an airport building and damaged a wing.

Alonso, his wife Raquel Del Rosario, his brother-in-law Marta Del Rosario and the pilot Alberto Fernandez were all unhurt in the accident.

"It's not as serious as it appears on the Internet," said a spokeswoman for the Spaniard. "But Fernando's had to postpone his return and will fly back today."

Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper reported that the private plane had clipped a wing on the terminal building as it was preparing to take off.

The two-times world champion was in Kenya for a New Year's Eve party being hosted by Renault boss Flavio Briatore.

Alonso, who has two years still to run on his contact with Renault, has long been linked with a move away from the team to join up with Ferrari.

Initially touted as a replacement for Felipe Massa, it has now been reported that Alonso could replace 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen at the Italian team, after the Finn struggled last season, winning just two Grands Prix and finishing third in the drivers' championship.

"That Fernando has always had an interest to drive for Ferrari is not a secret," Alonso's manager has said.

"What can I say though? 2010 is far away. It is too soon to speak about."

  2. Yeah but we're all forgetting one thing... A headline saying a plane had a minor scuff on the wing won't generate traffic or comments will it!

Just like Kubica or Heidfeld didn't say 'the 2009 cars are dangerous' in those exact words like another article title says. Heaven forbid the headlines on here these days should reflect the actual.

  11. Did anyone read past the first paragraph ? I hate to speculate here because i don't have the whole story however from what i read it sounds like it was a minor LOW SPEED incident. Considering that the planes wing hit the TERMINAL building suggests that the plane was taxiing out to the runway. Taxi speeds depending on aircraft type may reach a whopping 30KPH . This is most likely a story that would never have been a story if not for who was on the plane.

  14. I don't think "Plane Crash" is what actually happened, It sounds to me like the plane clipped a wing whilst taxiing. Hardly In the DC league of plane crashes. Where he actually did survive a plane crash.

  15. Mark C, you're an idiot. Hamilton's father worked two or three jobs since LH was six, up until the Mclaren sholarship kicked in when he was 13. How that is spoilt I'll never know.

The fact is that, love or hate him, a bunch of human beings weren't killed in a plane crash, one of which was Alonso.
