Alonso unhurt in plane crash - report

Eurosport - Tue, 06 Jan 11:17:00 2009

Fernando Alonso has escaped unhurt after being in a plane crash in Malindi, Kenya, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

2008 Belgium GP Renault Alonso - 0

Alonso and his family were in the process of taking off around 6pm on Sunday when the private jet touched an airport building and damaged a wing.

Alonso, his wife Raquel Del Rosario, his brother-in-law Marta Del Rosario and the pilot Alberto Fernandez were all unhurt in the accident.

"It's not as serious as it appears on the Internet," said a spokeswoman for the Spaniard. "But Fernando's had to postpone his return and will fly back today."

Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper reported that the private plane had clipped a wing on the terminal building as it was preparing to take off.

The two-times world champion was in Kenya for a New Year's Eve party being hosted by Renault boss Flavio Briatore.

Alonso, who has two years still to run on his contact with Renault, has long been linked with a move away from the team to join up with Ferrari.

Initially touted as a replacement for Felipe Massa, it has now been reported that Alonso could replace 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen at the Italian team, after the Finn struggled last season, winning just two Grands Prix and finishing third in the drivers' championship.

"That Fernando has always had an interest to drive for Ferrari is not a secret," Alonso's manager has said.

"What can I say though? 2010 is far away. It is too soon to speak about."

  1. in reply to normon normon what a load of rubbish u talk, kimim was the fastest on the track, but has lost the need to win, he was poor last year and a disgrace to the ferrari team, he was pants, why oh why is hamilton world champion then if this kimi is the fastest and still massa beat him aswell, go back to school , as for alonso he is fantastic, a true racer and a car technician, am i pleased he is ok, another worthy world champion.

  3. Glad to see everyone is unhurt. 2011 Ferrari dirves will be Alonso and Vettel and Alonso will still be upset that a younger dirver can beat him on equal terms.

  5. The comments wishing the plane crash had been a bit more severe are out of order, but thats what these places are all about. You are either hear to discuss or youre here to stir and bear bait. Dont get so worked up people. Dont take the bait.

  10. i am saddened to read some of the comments posted on here regarding fernando alonso. he is not my favourite driver but i would not wish him any harm either. i am relieved that no one was hurt in this accident. i am a mclaren fan and i support both drivers, not just hamilton. i also like to see the smaller teams doing well too. there are many great drivers within f1 fernando being one of those drivers. this site is not for venting hatred for drivers but should be about talking about the sport we so love. i for one get excited about every race no matter the outcome. please guys talk about f1 and not your hatred about drivers. life is too short for all of that. just enjoy formula one for the great sport it is.

  13. Lets talk about Alonso, he is a spoilt kid who had loads of money spent on him to get where he is today, how dare people show faith in him and how dare he pay that faith back by training hard and winning races!!! THE AUDACITY!!! fact is you dont become an F1 driver these days without money behind you, Hamilton, Alonso, Kimi, Massa, etc...they are all "spoilt little brats" (if thats what you want to call them) behind those wheels, except they arent, they are just people who had some luck, and had some backing and worked hard to get where they are now.

  17. I think everyones coments on here are very distastfull, this is a time when someone would need a little support. But all they get on here is people wishing the worst for him or saying that hamilton is such a better person. WELL LETS TALK ABOUT HAMILTON INSTEAD, HE IS A SPOILT KID SINCE THE AGE OF 5 HE HAS HAD ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD GIVEN TO HIM BY MACLAREN SO HE SHOULD BE GOOD, ANYONE COULD HAVE DONE WHAT THAT SPOILT BRAT HAS DONE WITH THE MONEY HE HAS HAD SPENT ON HIM. ok back to ALONSO he is a trully gifted driver and everyone supported Schumacer for all those years, well Alonso is the worlds repkacement for him, just as good and just needs some support. So come on everyone support a true future racing legend and support ALONSO not that spoilt brat hamilton.

  18. Incidently, as glad as I am to hear both he and his family are ok, I think the story would have been about an "runway incident" and not a "plane crash" had it not been for a famous person on board. That is of course if the story had ever made it to press in the first place. But at least they escaped unharmed.

  20. This news has brought out the incredible and unbelievable hatred some people posses any team or driver should come out and disown such cowards like they did over the incidents in Spain I still remember the cheering when M.S broke his legs in Silverstone.
