Premier League - Dossena to stay at Liverpool

Eurosport - Tue, 06 Jan 16:26:00 2009

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has insisted that he wants to keep hold of out of favour full-back Andrea Dossena.

FOOTBALL Liverpool Andrea Dossena - 0

The Italian arrived at Anfield from Udinese over the summer for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £7 million.

He was given the opportunity to establish himself at left-back but failed to impress and lost his place to Fabio Aurelio.

Aurelio suffered an injury at the end of November but Benitez turned to Argentine youngster Emiliano Insua rather than Dossena.

Dossena has been linked with a January move away from Liverpool but Benitez has ruled out a departure.

He does not want to lose any of his players as the Reds continue to mount a challenge for the Premier League title.

"I am not considering selling Dossena," Benitez said in the Daily Star.

"I think it is important to keep the squad together."

  2. Liverpool's greatest weakness is at the left backs. They do not match up to the quality available at the other top 4. Dossena acqusition was an error. Only a medoicre coach of an opposing team will not put him under pressure with a fast winger. He should be allowed to go. I also agree that Agger could conviniently play left back. He's definitely the most technically gifted and versatile defender in the team.He could even play central/defensive mid-field. Glen Johnson at right back for Liverpool will ultimately match up to Bosingwa and Evra as a full back if he improves on his defensive capabilities. Lennon will be a great new dimension to the attacking strength of Liverpool as the right side is quite weak. Kuyt is hardworking but not creative. I don't believe in an attacker whose greatest strength is defending.

  4. the last few games he played he made a big improvement,
worth sticking with, the proplem is that he hit some ok form but was then dropped again, same as with keane.

  5. Its all fergies fault we could of had Gabriel Heinze last season but he wouldn't let us now he is a good defender.

  6. get rid of dossena asap, while still at a small loss rather than later.he doesn't show a single class for each game involved.not epl stuff. insua is much much much better.come on rafa...doesn't make sense to keep him. just admit that u have make a mistake in signing him...everybody make mistakes once in a while.

  7. I've been impressed with the play of Insua, I think he's going to make a good impact at the left fullback position at Anfield for years to come. That being said it's wise on Rafa's part to keep hold of Dossena. Because with Insua set for international duty and Fabio coming off injury, there's no point in getting rid of depth when we can win the league title and a couple more cups.

  8. i also think matty upson would be a good signing if we can keep him fit and out of injury, think we need keane to settle in to the team to otherwise he may be on his way in the summer to. ato replace him tho may be hard but with the way things are going at utd, why not try bringing tevez? with the left and centre strong thing we need to strenghten the right, maybe aaron lennon?

  11. i'm really not convinced by dossena, his lapses at the back have been the cause of a lot of goals we've conceded. aurelio has just returned from injury (and has proven to be a bit injury prone) and insua at the u20's from 20 jan sort of justifies rafa's decision, but if the itialian doesn't step up before the end of the season, he's got to be headed for the exit door, be it at a loss or not

  12. comment 17: Yes, mate, great signing indeed - I like him, boy has he improved this year. Great asset for the national team. I'd alos like to see some more English, or at least British, players at Anfield. Nothing against any foreigner, but Liverpool as an English club with only two English players seems strange (Arsenal is even worse, yet ManU and Chelsea have a good English core). Never mind, viva Espana at Anfield...!

  13. I think Glen Johnson would be a good signing

  14. I like Dossena, he defends well, brings the ball forward on the left wing, and at times he impressed me more than Aurelio. Insua, however, is a delight as well. Fact is, clubs at that level need very good replacements and several options, not only because of injury issues but also to rest players. Benayoun and Babel, for example, are great players, yet need to show humility if they can't play all games - few players can (Gerrard, Torres, Reina, Carragher).

    From gordon.merk, on Tue 6 Jan 12:39PM
  15. let him stay, he does not worth $7m take him as agreat asset

  16. either give him a few more matches to prove himself or sell him now

  17. We have lots of cover at left back, Aurelio and Insua (although he is away for 3 weeks) but you could put Agger there and play either Carra, Skirtel or Sami at centre half . Agger has the pace and can go past a man. Also Carra played at left back under Houllier. Dossena is poor, get the money while we can. He may be the Italian international left back but he will cost us in the run in. He dives in, has no pace, can't pass, can't head..Joey Jones where are you??

    From scouse_bazz, on Tue 6 Jan 11:54AM
  18. Rather than keeping him for backup, I think it's more a case of saving Rafa and Liverpool the embarrasment of selling him at a loss, especially in these times when money is tight.
Next time they might want to do their homework before splashing out £7 million on a fullback...

    From vulcanraven01, on Tue 6 Jan 11:41AM
  19. why keep someone who isn't good enough just for the sake of having him 'just incase'? ... surely it would be wiser to bring in a decent left back for cover while the transfer window is open?

he's not good enough simple as ... if a forward makes mistakes he has other chances to score ... if a defender makes mistakes you let in goals ... simple logic really ...

From Paul G, on Tue 6 Jan 11:26AM
  20. we must give him a chance to improve why is 7 million and there's team linking for him we must wait and see
