Premier League - Middlesbrough block Downing exit

Middlesbrough have confirmed they have rejected Stewart Downing's transfer request amid renewed interest from suitors Tottenham.

Boro chief executive Keith Lamb said the club had turned down an improved bid from Spurs and that any further enquiries about the player would not be welcome.

Lamb told the club's official website: "We received a written transfer request from Stewart this morning (Monday). It was considered before being rejected.

"Prior to receiving the transfer request, we received an improved offer for Stewart from Tottenham.

"We immediately rejected this offer and informed Tottenham that Stewart Downing is not for sale and any further interest they have in the player will not be entertained."

The England international, who signed a new five-year deal with Boro in February last year, has become frustrated with the club's perceived lack of ambition and is desperate to quit the Riverside in a bid to further his career.

Downing's father had earlier claimed his son has little choice but to leave Middlesbrough if he wants to fulfil his ambitions.

Stewart Sr told the Evening Gazette: "Stewart's been frustrated since the summer, really.

"When he signed his new contract he was assured that there would be significant investment in the squad.

"He feels that the club haven't matched those expectations. He's also frustrated that the team is once again struggling in the Premier League.

"Obviously as a Middlesbrough lad, he's thought long and hard about the decision to hand in a transfer request, and he also hopes the fans will understand his reasons for doing so."

Spurs are thought to have offered in the region of £11 million for Downing, who came through the ranks at his hometown club.

But Boro chairman Steve Gibson and manager Gareth Southgate have insisted they will not allow Downing - or any other senior players - to leave as they look to arrest a worrying run of form that has seen the club go eight league games without a win.

"I have categorically told (Spurs chairman) Daniel Levy their interest is not welcome, nor will we entertain any further offers for Stewart," Gibson said.

"None of our senior players will be leaving the club this month."

Southgate said: "I'm not under any pressure to sell any player. In the situation we are in now we don't feel it would be right to let Stewart go."

Meanwhile, Lamb denied further speculation that midfielder Gary O'Neil had also handed in a transfer request.

"We have not received a transfer request from Gary but if we did receive one it would be rejected, as would any offer from another club.

"We believe that this squad of players is strong enough to substantially improve our league position and we are committed to keeping the squad together."

  1. Downing should commit himself to the club for the rest of this season and make it clear he will leave if the team does not perform better and end up in a Euro qualifying position. He has been unsettled for 2 seasons and needs a bigger better club to move to the next stage of his career. He has served his time at Boro and while it would be good if he stayed, life is not that easy.

  3. Spurs will not be a good move for Stuart Downing. Lets hope he sticks it out until the end of the season and maybe a bigger club might come in for him.

  4. TEVEZ IS AN ILLEGAL PLAYER AND SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING IN OUR COUNTRY. HE IS STILL OWNED BY A THIRD PARTY (THE REASON WEST HAM/SHEFF UTD HAVE GONE TO COURT). THE PREMIER LEAGUE HAVE SWEPT THE PROBLEM UNDER THE CARPET BY ALLOWING UTD TO "SIGN" A £30M PLAYER ON A LOAN, AND BECAUSE THE WHOLE FOOTBALL WORLD REVOLVES AROUND THE SELF PROCLAIMED(HOW ARROGANT) BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD, NO REAL QUESTIONS HAVE BEEN ASKED. TELL ME WHAT IS DIFFERENT BETWEEN THIS SITUATION AND THE SAME SCENARIO AT WEST HAM - CORRECT - NOTHING IS DIFFERENT APART FROM THE TEAM INVOLVED. THE PREMIER LEAGUE IS IN THE POCKET OF SIR ALEX AND UNITED, THE ABOVE SITUATION PROVES IT BEYOND DOUBT. TEVEZ HELPED UNITED TO A LEAGUE AND EURO CUP DOUBLE, THAT SHOULD ALWAYS BE TAINTED BECAUSE THEY HAVE PLAYED AN ILLEGAL PLAYER. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, THE RULES IN THIS COUNTRY STATE HE SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING HERE, YET NO ONES SEEMS THE SLIGHTEST BIT INTERESTED. IGNORE THIS AND YOU ARE NOT DOING YOUR PART TO PROTECT FOOTBALL. IT IS UP TO ALL OF US TO "WATCH OVER" FOOTBALL, BECAUSE THESE DAYS THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE ARE JUST HERE TO TAKE WHAT THEY CAN. THE GAME IN OTHER COUNTRIES HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BEYOND BELIEF (BETTING SCANDALS AND THE REFEREES SCANDAL IN ITALY) AND WE ARE GOING IN THE SAME DIRECTION. DONT COMPLAIN IN FIVE YEARS WHEN THE PREMIER LEAGUE HAVE BASTARDISED OUR SPORT EVEN MORE.

  5. My real issue here is the astronomical fee for a lad who appears no more than a bit nippy and has a "decent" left foot. He aint no where near as good as Ashley Young (for example) and people talking about £15M. Good luck to any club who pay that for him- and if boro can get it now they should take it. Also, i am not a boro fan, but am i not right in thinking you already have a lad in the reserves who plays this position, and is rumoured to look at least as good as Downing was at that age. Sell for good money, bring in the new bloke, move on.....

  6. just for the record look back on the last previous finals and see who were in the CC final................all the top 4 were in them. So so much for a mickey mouse cup then!!
Only teams who are worried about not being relegated or happy for mid table survival do not bother with it, so much for ambition in your clubs.
I think if you fans are happy with that, its no wonder teams like spurs will try and buy your best players!!
Remember Downing wants to go because he feels your club has no genuine ambition to match his!!

  7. i dont think stewie should go not to tottenham anyway he's just going to a worse team, if anything wait till end of season before making a decision, if anything gareth southgate should be buyin players to improve the side if he doesn't buy this month and improve then i wouldn't blame stewie leaving but he'd be mad to go to spurs, infact liverpool were mad not to sign him as he's improving all the time, and he should be in the ENGLAND squad all the time he's the best for that posistion

  8. @86 - he signed on the understanding there would be significant player investment, which hasn't happened. The mistake he made was not getting a clause put into the contract based upon this understanding.

  9. If a player wants to leave, let him go I say. Borough aren't ever going to be a force in the PL and there is no point keeping a player who doesn't want to play for you.

Cash in and buy someone who does.

  10. Oh and why did he signed a five year contract in February. Now that some other teams are showing interest suddenly Boro is bad for him. And he is not alone. There are other Downings up and down the country who are waiting to be better than their clubs at the first instance that another "big" club show any interest in them.

  13. Geoff B, U really make me laugh..
Maybe u have some brain issue, let me remind u, Spurs finished 11 last season, and this season... hahah... u can read the table your own.
And League Cup? Come on.. Everyone know League Cup is just a Micky Mouse Cup. None of top 4 even care about it.
At least Boro played at UEFA Cup final. Spurs was knocked out at the last 16.
u said "made the semis of every other cup as well"??? Get Real!!!

  14. Sam comment 84 you are an idiot, Spurs have not "fought" relegation in the past few seasons! They have finished 5th for the last 2 years and won the League Cup and made the semis of every other cup as well. If you can't see the difference between Spurs and Boro you are not qualified to comment on other posts.

  15. Lets face it. Boro fan here. Downing has done his time here has been a faithful servant, he's better than boro. he aint gonna sell himself to an under acheiving club like spurs. top 5 come in for him he'll go. Sorry reason he's not gone spurs in the last three years s because spurs aint acheived nothing for years, there just another also ran, infact, they been close to relegation for the last couple of years, the lad need to see a future. and yeah he can play. I seen people slag him of here in posts, have they really watched him play.

  16. He's qualit, but players should get there way in regards to this, as he wants to move his career on, southgate should be happy to help him on his way. And stop the arguments onhere, ii come on to read about football not peoples inbreds whatsits.

I can't see Spurs have any different, they are also a team which fought for relegation last few seasons.
Plus, they always over-estimate themselves, every season they always talk about "we target Euro football", so? They got nothing more than a big mouth.
