Khan questions 'unidentified man'

Fri, 06 Jan 00:03:00 2012

Boxer Amir Khan has accused an unidentified man of "interfering" with the judges' scorecards during his controversial defeat by Lamont Peterson in Washington.

Amir Khan departs the ring after losing to Lamont Peterson WBA in their super lightweight and IBF Junior welterweight title fight in Washington, December 11, 2011 - 0

Khan, who lost his WBA super-lightweight and IBF light-welterweight titles to Peterson, posted a number of messages on his Twitter account and highlighted footage from last month's fight as he questioned the appearance of a man at ringside.

"The truth is finally coming out slowly but surely ... if I lost fair and square then fair enough I've lost n I move on, but does it really take over 10 minutes from the final bell to decide who's won?" Khan said on Twitter.

Following the bout on December 10, there was confusion and an unusually long delay of about 10 minutes in announcing the majority decision in Peterson's favour.

"I'm angry as I want the rematch next to put things straight but it doesn't look like he wants it ... watch the fight from 9.10 seconds of this video there is a guy wearing a grey suit with a blue shirt wearing a hat," Khan said.

In the footage, a man can be seen next to WBA supervisor, Michael Welsh. He then appears to reach across in front of him.

Khan's camp said it was at this point when the man interfered with the scorecards.

"Who is this guy?" Khan asked on the social networking site.

"What was he doing? Will be interesting to see if we get our answer.

"I want Michael Welsh to speak out about what was going on. It's only right and fair to do so. I knew there was something dodgy with the scoring.

"This time in round 11 he's seen here clearly picking up a yellow judges slip.. Strictly against the rules."

Last month Khan said he was unhappy with the performance of referee Joe Cooper, who deducted Khan two points for pushing.

Khan's camp had already lodged an appeal against the result of the fight and a decision is expected later this month.

The IBF declined to comment until after the appeal hearing on January 18.

  1. Khan and his team and the paying boxing fans have every right to question who this mystery man was and what his business in the fight. The fact that there are people who doesn't like Khan has no relevance at this point. What is relevent is whether or not the paying public was cheated by some unsportsman like activity outside the ring. Until we get some satisfactory answers Peterson cannot call himself a true Champion! If there is some unsavoury activity both boxing boies should order an immediate rematch to settle the score in the ring!!

  4. @ Pat: Yeah, Ricky was hard done by, twice, by those sleazy Yanks. It was highway robbery. Lol

Just heard on ESPN that a WBA vice president called for a rematch in his "personal opinion." The WBA apparently can't identify the 'unidentified man.' Peterson was up for a rematch all along and said so publicly in the ring right after the decision was announced. Khan wants to invalidate the decision though. He'll get his rematch. But before that happens, Oscar de la Hoya reportedly wants Khan to fight Prescott again in England. Prescott is up for it.

Been through the forum again and you can see that the yanks are upset with our comment, voting against any body that says bad things about that fight that might be right, Yes he was fiddled, and again any British boxer that fights in America will not stand a chance unless he can knock them out.

  16. Further to my last, if you get a chance to watch the Khan v Limond fight, you will see Khans manager send one of "his boys" round to limonds corner after Khan has been put down and have a word, the fight goes Khans way from then on, up till that point he was out boxed and losing by a mile, would surely have been stopped or knocked out otherwise. Stopped watching boxing at pro level from that day.
