Downing downbeat after defeat

Wed 06 Feb, 12:00 PM

Cheltenham manager Keith Downing had no complaints after his side were beaten 2-0 at local rivals Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night. The loss at the Memorial Stadium was only the Robins' second defeat in seven matches, but Downing's side remain just one point off the relegation places.

Defender Craig Hinton volleyed Rovers in front and Rickie Lambert made sure of the points, firing home from 12 yards late on after Gavin Caines was penalised for a back pass.

Pirates goalkeeper Steve Phillips saved an 87th-minute penalty from Steven Gillespie to compound Cheltenham's misery.

"The better side won and we didn't create enough to trouble them," said Downing. "We came out second best in a lot of areas. We conceded at a bad time just before the break and never really got going apart from a 10-minute spell in the second half.

"I thought the free-kick for a back pass that led to their second goal was a bit harsh because our defender was stretching for the ball. But I'm certainly not going to blame refereeing decisions.

"We've had a good run recently, but have never been complacent enough to think we are out of trouble."
