The Latics top scorer, who has found the back of the net 15 times already this season, is struggling to overcome an Achilles injury and has not trained all week ahead of the trip to the East Midlands.

Manager John Sheridan will give Hughes every chance to recover but fellow strikers Lewis Alessandra, Andy Liddell and on-loan Dean Windass are all vying for a starting berth.

Deadline-day loan signing Daniel Jones is continuing his recovery from a knee injury at parent club Wolves and will be unavailable but Wales international Neil Eardley should return at right-back.

Dale Stephens has recently returned to full training and is available for selection but veteran goalkeeper Mark Crossley remains sidelined with a long-term back problem.

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson is set to name an unchanged squad for the match.

The league leaders incurred no fresh injury or suspension problems in the 4-1 midweek defeat of Walsall.

With his side 3-0 up after 57 minutes at the Banks Stadium, Pearson was able to withdraw top scorer Matty Fryatt and give the 25-goal striker a rest ahead of the game against the Latics.

Bruno Berner passed a late fitness test on a calf injury to make the bench against the Saddlers and the Swiss defender will hope to challenge Joe Mattock for the left-back spot.

Goalkeeper Paul Henderson (groin), defenders Aleksandar Tunchev and Patrick Kisnorbo (both knee) and midfielder Stephen Clemence (ankle and heel) remain out.
