Baumann wins Chamonix combined
Sun, 05 Feb 15:37:00 2012
Austria's Romed Baumann staked his claim as one of the most versatile skiers on the men's World Cup circuit when he won the Chamonix super-combined.
Second in Saturday's downhill on the same Verte des Houches course, the 26-year-old skier from Tyrol was fastest in the morning speed section to safely clinch victory after the afternoon slalom run in a time of two minutes and 56.10 seconds.
France's Alexis Pinturault pleased home fans by finishing second, 1.10 behind, thanks to a blistering slalom leg.
Third place went to Swiss Beat Feuz, 1.19 adrift, for his third super-combined podium in succession.
World Cup leader Ivica Kostelic finished a disappointing seventh, 1.44 off the pace.
"I thought I'd limited the damage in the downhill but the slalom let me down for once," the Croatian said.
Baumann triumphs in Chamonix

Agree with the despairing comments. Come on Eurosport! We love the skiing coverage so please finish the job off properly. I only wish I could get ORF (Austrian TV) coverage of the skiing events. They really go to town
Just been trying to set the sky recorder for the coming weekend as i will be out most of the time - taking part in sport, yet again the alpine skiing programme does not make sense.
Again folks we will have the first half of a race life and no live second run. If we are lucky there are higlights late at night. However there is lots and lots of repeats of other sport and plenty of african football.
In addition, we appear to have the women skiing in Sochi and Andorra on the same day! I know Vonn is a brilliant skier but even this I would think is beyond her ability.
Could EUROSPORT employ someone on the pragramming side that understands the pricnciples of the different type of alpine ski races and and provides a balanced programme for all,
The small Nicholas has point. Especially concerning the Superbowl. However, regarding Ski Sunday on the BBC, we have to wait a whole week for them to show the previous Sunday's race, if they show it at all. By which time there's not a lot of point. It's better than nothing I suppose.
The trouble with 'SS' is the viewer has to sit through half an hour of pseudo-dramatic, sentimental twoddle from messrs Bell and Coates pandering to the mass market dunderheads with ADHD, who can't simply watch it for the racing alone.
The other thing I find slightly ridiculous about the BBC is they hire Matt Chilton (a contracted Eurosport commentator!!!) to dub his commentary over a recording of the skiing pretending it's live.
Much hilarity ensues in the abode of Gideon Silex. And also much depression.
There is of course Ski Sunday on the BBC, which has shown much more of the Chamonix downhill. On the other hand they've seen fit to grace BBC 1 with several hours of American Football!
Hi guys,
I live in Copenhagen ... looks like european Eurosport is different.
I saw live all todays skiing ... starting with the downhill mens from Chamonix, then the ladies Super G from Garmisch and then the mens slalom from Chamonix.
It was covered live by Eurosport .... how coe thay don't show it live in the UK ?
Great days skiing ... apart from Lindsey having an uphill ski problem.

Like the other people who have commented I am absolutely furious, the only clash was with a" z" rated football game that could have been screened some other time. I've already missed the ends of several races due to tennis (a sport I really detest so guess how thrilled I am about that) because if I have to record it no-one changes the schedule so I get too much of the very thing I didn't want and I run out of time for the actual race.
I know there is limited time but it would be nice on "British" Eurosport if we could actually see the British skiers, it might give them an incentive and some sponsorship
I'm afraid I can't afford to pay out even more money on something I am hardly going to use and what really hurts is that I only have a Sky subscription to make sure I can watch Eurosport !!! I can't see how I can get it otherwise....if anyone out there knows where I can get on something like a Freesat system..... please tell me.
I totally agree with the comments of gideonsilex above.,
I can understand therebe a clash of showing all sports live at the weekend and you have to make a descison on what to show live. However, if you can not show something live at least show the highlights.
This time however, live ski jumping was shown instead of the slalom leg of the combined. Then to add insult to injury. the live ski jumping was cancelled and instread of showing the skiing we got highlights of the ski jumping from the previous day which had already been shown. Why did you not go to the sking at chamonoix?
Then we had the cycling. Now I am a cycling fan and would wwould watch the cycling.. However, the tour of qatar is as dull as dishwater, flat roads and no scenery. 30km of cycling on desrt roads only needs to be shown once, maybe twice.but instead it is on at least 4 times today - the same bit of the race.
Why could the highlights of the super combined at chamonoix, ie both down hill and slalom be shown instead of one of the endless repeaats of the cycling or ski jumping? You showed the down hil section live, I cqannot understand why there where no plans to show the second part.. It makes no programming sense.
I ended up follwing the slalom by following live timings off an austrian newspaper website. Just timings table no pictures. The fact that pinerault went from 27th to 2nd place was unbelievable and would have made exciting tv to watch, certainly better than the endless repeats of ski jumping and cycling.
Please, please put on then the highlights of the whole of this race.
Bring me the head of the Head of Eurosport. Failing that, Nick Fellowes will do.
Once again, thank you Eurosport for ruining ANOTHER race for thousands of skiing fans (in the UK at least).
Your decision not to show the slamon section of the combined event, in favour of moving it to the pay per view system, is an apalling way to treat your loyal viewers who simply want to follow their sport on the only media platform available in this country.
All we ask is the opportunity to see the racing. No frills, no fancy add-ons, just flat out competition. I would say you've lost a formerly happy customer, but 1) you wouldn't care less, and 2) As I love the sport more than life itself, I have no choice but to continue watching your rapidly degrading coverage.
Well done Romed Baumann and Happy 50th to Lindsey Vonn.
