Mark Webber says he is looking forward to proving himself again in 2012 after his difficult 2011 Formula 1 season

Mark Webber says he is looking forward to proving himself again in 2012 after his difficult '11 Formula 1 season.

The Australian only won one race last year as his Red Bull Racing team-mate Sebastian Vettel swept to a dominant championship triumph.

Webber acknowledged that Vettel's form during his title-winning seasons had set a tough benchmark, but said he was raring to get the season underway and show that 2011 was just a blip.

"Many sportsmen or women, when you don't get the most out of a situation, you always want to come back and improve and do a better job," said Webber as part of the launch of Red Bull's new RB8.

"The bar has been lifted very, very high in the last few seasons and it's the challenge I'm looking forward to.

"I've had a really good winter and prepared for the season as best I can so I'm looking forward to the new season, I just cannot wait to get racing. We can talk a lot about it but we need to get on the track."

Webber added that he did not feel his 2011 campaign had been as disappointing as it had been portrayed.

"As you say last year wasn't an amazing season, but it wasn't too bad for me," he argued. "I still managed to finish third in the drivers' championship, not far off second with Jenson [Button] there, so it was a great way for me to finish the year with the victory in Brazil and many strong results.

"We're always learning as athletes and I'm looking forward to 2012, it's got some great opportunities for me.

"You know the old cliche take each race as it comes but that's how it will be initially and we'll go from there."

  1. I like the guy, he is very straight forward and a very good driver, but just didn't delivered the performance needed for championship. titles are not won by sparkles of briliance, they are won by that plus consistency. about his accidents, well, it's good he has a life outside formula 1 too.

  2. Webber is in the same boat as Coulthard and Massa, they had a competitive team, wins under their belt , turns out they were all mouth no titles. He moaned that Vettel was getting preferential treatment, even though he was at RB for 2 full seasons before Vettel turned up and showed him ( and Coulthard) how it was supposed to be done.

Webber isn`t rubbish, but he isn`t champ material either....he had a gilt-edged chance of the title in 2010....and threw it away, fading at the business end and little wonder, carrying a broken shoulder in the last few races due to another playtime accident and unforced errors on the track....Vettel did not have to be asked twice to grab the title.

  4. I have no doubt Mark will rebound this year. As other commentators have already pointed out, a strong start is essential. I do find it sad so many people think he's rubbish, when a lesser driver would have simply given up half-way through the last season (and some plainly did). Not Webber, he was giving it his all, right down to the end.

  5. Colin B, it looks like we are agreeing. We all like to see good racing. And I think Webber is still a great driver. The only issue if RB will let him race Vettel. Note that RB will replace Wbber in a minute if that will help them win. Also, if they are able to give preferencial treatment to Vettel as opposed to Webber, why do you think a new driver will not be relegated to the number 2 slot?

Webbers lump on leg is nothing to brag about....just another playtime mishap and shows he is not focused on title....Vettel is.
In 2011 Webber let it be known he might leave RB....there was a resounding silence and absolutely no interest whatsoever from Ferrari as they already have a door-mat....he is called Massa.
If Vettel stays at RB then Webber has no chance of a title....end of.
Yours is wishful thinking, Lantrim and nothing to do with reality.

  7. should be an interesting year...can't wait for the 1st test tomorrow

  8. KMF of course I understand that but we all want to see the best racing. The more they change the rules to suit team orders the more it ruins the whole thing. It just so annoying seeing the same old rubbish getting another chance when there will likely be much better drivers ending up among the also rans at the tail end. Its just the way of F1 I suppose.

  9. Colin B, of course you don't care who wins the constructor's title, but you are not RB. They care because that is how they make their money. So, if Webber and Vettel give them the best chance to win, they will keep them as their drivers.

I know Webber lost a great chance for the championship in 2010, but I still keep on hoping he can win one before he retires. Is it likely? Maybe not, but until he retires, I will keep on hoping.

  10. Lets not forget about Marks bike crash, anyone who has seen the lump on his leg, will know he's no loser! Vettel is at his best, however Ferrari given the chances of Webber services, would snap them up in a second. Every team needs a foundation a steady hand, Button, Schmacher and Webber all older drivers within established teams, with a chance of winning the championship.

I think you need to revisit 2010. Vettel actually started much faster and (probably) would have won the first two races without mechanical issues and it's the same for Korea.
That's easily 40 points lost to mechanical failures.

  12. KMF it is for the sake of entertainment that Id like to see the back of him. I personally dont give a @#$% what team wins the constructors or who helps who win the drivers title. At least at McLaren it is opened up for both drivers to give it their all and not worry about what the other ones doing. Im fed up seeing him walk around with a long face blaming everything that goes wrong on someone else. He just doesnt make the grade after all these years.

From COLIN B, on Tue 7 Feb 2:42
  13. 2010 was his only chance at getting a championship and he fluffed it, what makes him think that anything has changed other than now his team mate is a double world champion?

    From paulhancock1123, on Tue 7 Feb 1:59
  14. Colin B, you are not making any sense. Why will RB get rid of him? They won both championships with the lineup they have so why will they want to make a change? Webber is a good driver, but as Semere said, if he wants to win the championship, he needs to begin strong if not the team will coalesce behind Vettel.

From kmf, on Tue 7 Feb 0:54
  15. We've given up waiting on you years ago. You are only Vettels rear gunner. Red Bull should have got rid of him.

From COLIN B, on Tue 7 Feb 0:45
  16. I just wonder what would have happened with 2011 if Webber had won the title 2 years ago (mind you he was very close but blew it in korea), if vettel can dominate in that way then why not Webber? He was performing much better in the first half of the season than Vettel but unfortunately for him Vettel matured too quickly later on. Webber needs to hit the ground running and assert his authority over Vettel otherwise he'll remain second fiddle to Vettel for the forseeable future : )

From Semere, on Tue 7 Feb 0:25
  17. Yes Mark....since the business end of 2010 season we have been waiting for you to `prove yourself` and no....you can`t say RB/Vettel throwing you a `bun` by letting you win in Brazil 2011 is proving yourself....lets face it `cobber`, the only way you or anyone else has a chance in 2012 against Vettel`s 3rd title is if you can take points off him....erham.....might as well give him it now!
