Ferguson hits out at linesman

Mon, 06 Feb 08:01:53 2012

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson could find himself in trouble with the Football Association after appearing to question the integrity of linesman Darren Cann in their 3-3 draw at Chelsea.

United fought back from 3-0 down to emerge from Stamford Bridge with a point thanks to two second-half penalties from Wayne Rooney and a late header from substitute Javier Hernandez.

Ferguson's joy at the epic comeback was tempered somewhat by Cann's failure to flag for a foul which he believes Gary Cahill committed on Danny Welbeck in the first half.

"They should've had a man sent off in the first half. Danny Welbeck's clear through and he was brought down," Ferguson said. "Okay, it's outside the box, (but there was) nothing, no decision.

"That linesman (Cann), (has) given a penalty kick against us from 40 yards away last year against Liverpool, this year against Arsenal - and he can't see that?

"I don't blame (referee) Howard Webb - he needed help in that situation and he didn't get it. That assistant referee, who's all too happy to flag at Old Trafford for penalty kicks, didn't give them."

  1. fergie moans and complains about one or two decisions that a ref or a linesman has dared to give against man utd ,but what about the literally HUNDREDS of dodgy decisions that have gone in his favour over the last 26 seasons ,and he has the nerve to make out hes hard done to by the refs , unbelievable !!!

  4. Yes United should have had a penalty early in the game and possibly Cahill might have been sent off. But wasn't this a great game to watch and that must count for something surely. I'd settle for seeing a match like this every week.

  5. What is SAF on about? There was no foul on Welbeck and then he gets a penalty (the 2nd) when the player clearly goes looking for a leg to trip over. I'm no Chelsea fan, I just like to see fair play.

  8. alcholic ferguson might be ashamed of himself if he had a conscience..his failing team stole a draw through the disgraceful referee who gave them 2 penalties that were never penalties to ensure they stole a draw, and idiot complains about a linesman.
