Leverkusen take lead over Hamburg

Thu 06 Mar, 11:00 PM

Bayer Leverkusen won 1-0 in the first leg of their all-German UEFA Cup last-16 showdown with Hamburg, Theofanis Gekas scoring for the hosts.Gekas' header in the 77th minute of Thursday's BayArena clash proved enough for Leverkusen, who lost and played out a home draw in two Bundesliga meetings with Hamburg this season.

The match was the first leg of the 12th all-German UEFA Cup tie, with the last showdown dating back to Leverkusen's 1-0 aggregate victory over Werder Bremen in the 1987-88 semi-finals.

Hamburg's backline were dominant in the first half, allowing only one serious chance as Sergej Barbarez struck a left-footer from 18 yards but Hamburg keeper Frank Rost had little trouble collecting.

Both sides came out after the break more with more attacking intent.

Hamburg midfielder David Jarolim had the first chance in the 46th minute, collecting a pass from Jose Paolo Guerrero before shooting well over Leverkusen keeper Rene Adler's crossbar.

Leverkusen stormed back a minute later and Gekas sent a header just inches over the crossbar from eight yards.

Michael Skibbe's hosts replied in the 50th minute, but Tranquillo Barnetta's shot went wide of the right upright.

The game remained open and Gekas nearly caught Rost out of position but his header was just off target.

However, the Greek striker finally got his goal with 13 minutes remaining. Gekas rose to meet Barnetta's corner and powered a header past Rost.

Gekas had another golden chance with four minutes left but he was unable to connect cleanly from four yards.

Hamburg boss Huub Stevens suffered further disappointment when his defensive stalwart Vincent Kompany was booked and will now miss the return leg, as will Nigel de Jong.
