Pele has paid tribute to Sheffield football legend Derek Dooley who sadly passed away on Wednesday at the age of 78.Dooley crossed the football divide in Sheffield, both playing and managing Sheffield Wednesday before undertaking a number of off-field roles at United, including chairman.

He was awarded an MBE in 2003 before retiring three years later and was unique in bridging the football divide in the city with both sets of supporters united in their fondness for Dooley.

Pele met Dooley when he visited south Yorkshire as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Sheffield FC, the world's oldest football club.

He told the Blades' official website: "I know he will be affectionately remembered by everyone at Sheffield United because they are a family club.

"When I was at Bramall Lane last year I was able to spend some time with Derek talking about the past and how things had changed.

"We had a great time reminiscing about the old days of international football and club football.

"He was a lovely man and I want to offer my condolences to Derek's family."
