Real Madrid crashed out of the Champions League after a thrilling 2-1 loss to Roma at the Santiago Bernabeu gave the Italians a 4-2 aggregate win and a place in the quarter finals.
Goals from Rodrigo Taddei and Mirko Vucinic gave the visitors the win on the night, Raul equalising for Real but ultimately in vain after Vucinic's injury-time heart-breaker.
The result means that the only Spanish team left in the draw for the quarter-finals are Barcelona.
The sides traded chances in a tense first half, Real's Julio Baptista forcing a good save from Doni on the quarter hour after a well-worked free kick and then somehow firing over when put through by Robinho.
Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani somehow saw consecutive efforts kept out, the first a 30 yard thunderbolt that crashed off the angle of post and bar and - after Francesco Totti picked up the loose ball and found him again on the edge of the box - a second effort that was well saved by Iker Casillas.
The second half saw Real start with the greater intent, Baptista unlucky to see his quite brilliant free kick dip just too late and bounce off the top of the crossbar.
An all-action opening 20 minutes also saw Fabio Cannavaro clear spectacularly off the line when Simone Perrotta latched onto the ball following a Cicinho run while Doni saved well from Mahamadou Diarra.
Soon after the same man felt he had a decent claim for a penalty after Juan appeared to raise an arm when clearing a Guti free kick from his head, although the Mali midfielder also had a hand raised.
Roma were then again denied by the woodwork, Vucinic hammering a rising drive off the angle of post and bar only seconds after coming on as a substitute, Real once more demanding a penalty from the counter when Juan again seemed to play the ball.
With 20 minutes remaining Real were reduced to ten men when Vucinic cleverly flicked the ball around Pepe on the by-line just to the left of the area, the Brazilian-Portuguese subsequently receiving his second yellow card for hauling the Montenegro forward down.
And Roma went ahead on the night soon afterwards, full back Max Tonetto running into space on the left before sending an inch-perfect cross onto the head of Taddei, whose bullet header nestled in the top right corner.
But Real hit back immediately, a one-touch passing move seeing Guti thread the ball through to Raul who turned and finished low past Doni with aplomb.
Sensing blood despite losing a defender, Los Merengues did not look like they were a man light, second half introduction Royston Drenthe almost forcing Cicinho into a freakish own-goal when his cross was diverted over Doni and onto the roof of the net, while Robinho fed Raul whose shot was deflected over.
The final, frantic ten minutes saw a flurry of yellow cards as Real became frustrated by Roma's attempts to time-waste and break up the play by fair or foul means, while Roma had a wonderful chance to seal the deal when De Rossi somehow missed Taddei's header across the goal-line.
And Roma made sure of the win when, two minutes into injury-time, Vucinic headed past a stranded Casillas to end Real's dream of a first Champions League title since 2002.
