Manuel Neuer produced a heroic display as Schalke beat Porto 4-1 on penalties to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Neuer, who conjured up a number of fantastic saves throughout the night, saved penalties from both Bruno Alves and Lisandro Lopez before Jermaine Jones stepped up to send Schalke through to the last eight of the competition.
Lisandro had scored four minutes from time to take the match into extra-time, levelling the tie at 1-1 on aggregate after Schalke's 1-0 victory a fortnight ago.
Porto got the match off to a quick start with Jose Bosingwa immediately testing a nervous looking Neuer, who needed all his speed to recover and slap his spilled save away to safety before Lisandro raced in for the follow up.
The hosts continued to batter the Schalke defence and forced Neuer to produce two fantastic saves from Lisandro and Tarik Sektioui in quick succession to keep his side ahead.
Ricardo Queresma produced his best effort of the first half in the 38th minute almost exposing a still nervy Neuer with a shot from just inside the area. But the German keeper got lucky as Mladen Krstajic was on hand to thump the spilled ball away to safety.
The visitors did have a golden chance just before the interval with Kevin Kuranyi somehow managing to send his unchallenged header, from Levan Kobiashvili's free kick, well wide of the target.
Neuer was again forced to play the hero for Schalke in a more subdued second half when he somehow managed to get a raised leg into contact with the ball as an unchallenged Sektioui tried to head home from only a yard out.
Porto were very lucky not to be reduced to 10 men when Helton clearly handled the ball outside the area in the 65th minute. The Brazilian, in a moment of madness, came out to the edge of the area as Kuranyi approached and was left stranded when Halil Altintop received the ball. Helton put his hands up to block the shot while standing a good metre outside the box but neither the referee nor his assistants spotted the infringement and play was allowed to continue.
But Jorge Fucile was shown a straight red card eight minutes from time for a tackle on Kobiashvili, but being reduced 10 men seemed to revitalise Porto and just four minutes later Lisandro produced a moment of brilliance to get the goal that kept them in the tie.
Receiving Lucho's pass on the edge of the area, Lisandro took a touch to turn before calmly thumping the ball into the top left hand corner of the net.
There was just enough time left for Porto to have one last chance to finish the match in normal time as Queresma attempted to curl a cheeky free kick into the left corner of the net with the outside of his right foot. But the Portuguese forward could not curl the ball quite enough and his shot drifted just wide of the post to send the match into extra time.
Queresma also enjoyed a gilt-edged chance in the first half of extra time to win the match for Porto. But he took too much time before releasing his shot with only the keeper to beat and the excellent Neuer spread himself wide enough to produce another brilliant save.
The second half of extra time was also all Porto as Ernesto Farias's dramatic bicycle kick from Lucho's pass only narrowly drifted over the crossbar and Pedro Emanuel's ferocious shot, from a Queresma free kick, required a very quick reaction save from Neuer.
But the Portuguese side still could not get the ball into the back of the net and the match went to a penalty shootout.
Rafinha got the spot kick competition off to the perfect start for the visitors getting enough power behind his shot that it ended up in the back of the net despite Helton getting his hand to it.
Lucho levelled up firing his penalty down the middle of the net after sending Neuer diving to the left, but Ivan Rakitic quickly put Schalke back in the lead with a cool shot to the right.
Neuer then stepped up to save his first penalty, although Alves's penalty was a poor one, before Altintop further increased Schalke's lead with almost a carbon copy of Rakitic's spot kick before him.
Lisandro's penalty was a much tougher save for Neuer who was forced to stretch up with his right hand whilst diving to his left to stop the ball. But the 21-year-old German had enough strength to give Jones the perfect chance to send Schalke through.
Sure enough Jones stepped up and confidently finished Porto's challenge watching his shot bounce off the bottom of the cross bar before it ended up in the back of the net.
