Cristiano Ronaldo's "arrogance" makes him a target for opposing defenders, according to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.
Hitting out at the rise of rash challenges in the Barclays Premier League of late, Wenger used the example of the Manchester United winger as a player who does not always get enough protection.
"Sometimes I feel Manchester United get too much protection and sometimes they don't get enough and Ronaldo is a specific example of that," Wenger said.
"Sometimes his arrogance is provocative - and his class as well.
"But when a player is not protected it's not right. When there is a bad tackle you have to be punished and get sent off the pitch."
Ronaldo was in the wars again during United's 2-1 win over Newcastle at St James' Park on Wednesday night, clashing with Alan Smith on the pitch and Steven Taylor off it in a tunnel bust-up.
Wenger has been concerned by a rise in reckless tackles this season.
Wigan's Lee Cattermole saw red on Wednesday night for a lunge at Scott Parker, while Everton yesterday confirmed that Victor Anichebe will miss the rest of the season as a result of a Kevin Nolan tackle on January 22.
Wenger wants to see longer bans of up to 10 matches introduced for guilty players, claiming three matches is not enough when the victims can be sidelined for so long.
"They could create a special committee to analyse if three [games' suspension] is enough or not," he said. "I feel in some tackles 10 games is not enough."

he is arrogant doesnot means he is not a good player, so what is your stress Mr. Wenger, please leave our World Best for Us @3$%%^^&&*(())
accept it,igwe g. those 10 top name that u give allready past their glory days. todays is the young players day. win the world footballer in age 23 ronaldo is the best, that the fact, messi will coming from behind and u must know they only u23 players, in your age were r u now?????? not only ronaldo diving even old "pippo" frm milan also good in diving, solid drogba also diving sometimes, all over players will dive if u touch me, so accept it thats part of football today.
As a Gunner, I think Wenger should stop worrying about Ronaldo, and start plotting how to win us some trophies.
I don't care if Ronaldo's arrogant or not, he doesn't play for Arsenal so what's the bother? Despite his arrogance, we beat Man U sometimes, and sometimes they beat us - so what's the problem?
Please Wenger, try and give us a trophy this season, then we'll all join you in telling Ronaldo what we think of his antics (he is a good player though, and does get some good Fantasy Football points..., whether he's arrogant or not!).
At least Ronaldo has assets to be arrogant about. Wouldn't CFC, AF, LF and all other FCs like to have his arrogance? Dream on....you gotta be on top of the league to be arrogant and I guess you anti-ManU fans have nothing to be arrogant about. We are on course of a clean sweep. ARROGANT yeah buddies
79 Right, What is the kind of arrogant does this player show?
If I was as good a player as Ronaldo, I'd be arrogant too!! However, I also feel that he goes to ground too easily when challenged. I respect Mr Wenger as a manager and when he talks, smart people should listen. Ronaldos talent sets himself up as a target. That doesn't mean defenders set out with the intention to deliberately hurt him, but to try and deny him any space to play. Sometimes, because of his speed of foot, an otherwise well-timed challenge results in a foul. I'd like to see more players play to the whistle and avoid the "Dying Swan" routine when this happens.
Rumour has it that the MOD were going to commission Vickers Shipyard in Yarrow to build a new fleet of submarines for the Royal Navy, but decided that the work should go to Portugal, after seeing Portugal's greatest diver in action!
Funky you are bigger fool, Okocha has been to 3 world cups, won the African Footballer award, won the African Nations cup and played some of europe top club. And is a master in football. Get your spelling right Motha F, its Okocha not Olocha. Fool
LOL @ 79 igwe g " best the world have ever since " and the fact he named olocha in his list...what a fool !!
Ha ha ,Cry baby Ronaldo, I guess its all that cheap oil he puts on his dumb hair. I will list 10 football juggling best the world have ever since
1. Hagi
2. Gaza
3. Ronaldhino
4. Okocha
5. Dennis Bergkam
6. Maradona
7. Zidane
8. Baggio
9. Luis caminero
10. Johan Kropf
Now tell do u seriously think Ronaldo is can ever be in list( What was fifa thinking when they awarded this dumb player world footballer)
#62, Cheers mate. But clueless people like 'soul finder' can't see that team achievements are also a big factor in who gets the top awards. Ronaldo could win every award from now until the end of his career, and I would STILL pay to see Messi before him. NOW, get back to your comic books ya GLORY HUNTING CLOWN.
Lot of you should read articles and NOT headings, before posting. What wenger said is true for lots of footballers, but Ronaldo especially. All the arrogant players with fancy tricks get abused. Anyone remembers real Ronaldo, 3 horrific knee injuries. That is not coincidence.
And Im not getting MU fans, last year you wanted to crucify him for wanting to leave MUTD, all of a sudden some of you would actually have sex with him! He is an arrogant pri*k, thats a fact, not an opinion. Im Arsenal fan, but I have the same opinion about Adebayor, he had a good season and the thinks hes on top of the world and can piss on everyone from up there...
United fans still missing the point. God how are so many people on here so thick?
Diving ronaldo, i don't think he is that good, messi is the best.learn frm messi and you will be better Chris and stop the crocodile walk when taking free kicks please cus you make me sh,,,,t
