Downing has eyes on the prize

Sun 06 Apr, 04:45 PM

Cheltenham boss Keith Downing believes "51 points might be enough" to secure his side's League One status despite losing to Nottingham Forest. The Robins were thoroughly outclassed by ambitious Forest but, after Crewe lost and Millwall and Gillingham drew 1-1, boss Downing now feels one more win will ensure his side's survival.

"About six weeks ago I said that we needed 54 points but looking at it 51 might be enough to do it.

"We lost 3-0 at Forest last season and never got near them. They are a good side and we gave them more of a game this time - now we've got to finish the job off and stay in this division.

"I've got an honest bunch of players - and I cannot ask any more of them in terms of effort and application - but sometimes quality is hard to sustain.

"If we could stay up it would be an achievement that not many people expected. We want to play at this level again next season and that's the incentive for us over the next four games."
