Cassani Stuns Juve

Sun 06 Apr, 10:09 PM

Mattia Cassani scored a dramatic late winner as Palermo edged out Juventus 3-2.

Palermo forward Amauri played his way into the shop window against a club reportedly among those interested in acquiring his services with two goals in the first half.

But the second half belonged to Alessandro Del Piero, who brought Juve back into the game in the 52nd minute, equalised in the 71st minute before hitting the post as the Bianconeri looked for a winner.

Yet there was one final twist in the tale with Cassani's late strike giving coach Stefano Colantuono a win on his return to the Palermo bench and practically ending Juve's slim hopes of winning the Scudetto.

Inter Milan restored their four-point advantage over Roma at the top with a 2-0 win over Atalanta on Sunday.

Roma's 3-2 defeat of Genoa on Saturday cranked up the pressure on Roberto Mancini's men, but they responded with a comfortable victory.

Patrick Vieira gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half with a powerful header from a corner, before 17-year-old Mario Balotelli made the points safe 16 minutes from time when he rounded Ferdinando Coppola to score.

A forgettable day for Atalanta was completed when Cristiano Doni was sent off for dissent.

Elsewhere, new Catania coach Walter Zenga got off to the perfect start in Serie A as his side sailed to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Napoli.

Giuseppe Colucci set the tone for the match when he scored as early as the third minute before Gionatha Spinesi doubled the hosts' advantage and Juan Manuel Vargas sealed the victory shortly after half-time.

Zenga, who has never coached at a level higher than Serie C1 in Italy, was handed the reins of the Sicilian minnows earlier this week after Silvio Baldini stepped down following defeat at Torino.

Fiorentina beat relegation battlers Reggina 2-0 to maintain a firm grip on fourth place in Serie A.

Goals either side of the break from Giampaolo Pazzini and Adrian Mutu ensured the win while Reggina hit the post through Franco Brienza and Fiorentina Manuel Pasqual hit the crossbar in an entertaining encounter.

Sampdoria made it five wins in their last six games to remain in the race for the last Champions League qualifying spot after beating struggling Livorno 2-0.

Christian Maggio and Emiliano Bonazzoli both scored in the second half to extend Livorno's winless run to six matches.

Giancarlo Camolese's men remain just one place above the relegation zone on goal difference and are just two points off the foot of the table.

In-form Siena continued their surge up the table as they held high-flying Udinese to a 1-1 draw.

Substitute Houssoine Kharja gave Siena the lead on 69 minutes, shortly after coming off the bench, before Udinese coach Pasquale Marino pulled off an equally astute substitution by bringing on Antonio Floro Flore, who scored the leveller on 77 minutes.

Parma slipped dangerously close to the relegation zone despite earning a point from a 2-2 draw at home to Lazio.

Parma took a 16th-minute lead through Igor Budan but Lazio scored twice in three minutes courtesy of Goran Pandev and Rolando Bianchi.

Massimo Paci equalised three minutes before half-time and neither side were able to find a winner in the second half.

With lowly Catania pulling off their surprise win, the hosts dropped to 16th, just a point above the relegation zone, while Lazio remain 11th having still only won once away from home this season.

Ighli Vannucchi popped up with the winner three minutes from time as Empoli moved off the foot of the table with a priceless 1-0 away victory at Torino.

The result marks a superb start for returning Empoli coach Luigi Cagni, who was re-appointed by the Tuscan club after the dismissal of Alberto Malesani.

The three points lift Empoli above Cagliari and Reggina and on to 29 points, although Cagni's troops remain in the relegation zone due to an inferior goal difference compared to 17th-placed Livorno.

Torino's 10th defeat of the campaign leaves them five points clear of the drop zone with just six games remaining.

On Saturday, Roma put their Champions League setback against Manchester United behind them with a late 3-2 win over Genoa.

Daniele De Rossi's spot-kick with 10 minutes remaining earned the Giallorossi victory at the Stadio Olimpico.

Rodrigo Taddei had put Roma ahead early on before Mirko Vucinic's strike made it 2-0 in the 17th minute.

Having dominated the opening half-hour, the Giallorossi sat on their lead and ended up paying for it after the interval.

Marco Rossi reduced the deficit in the 58th minute from close range before substitute Julio Leon levelled the score seconds later.

However, De Rossi's penalty, which was awarded after he was brought down by Marco Borriello, snatched all three points for the Romans.

And to make matters worse for the visitors, their coach Giampiero Gasperini was sent to the stands for protesting too vehemently at the penalty decision.

Kaka returned to the AC Milan line-up with a superb opening goal as they brushed aside Cagliari 3-1.

Milan had something to prove having lost three of their last four league games, and the Brazilian handed them a dream start with a curling 18-yard effort after just eight minutes.

Filippo Inzaghi, on his own return from a month-long injury, then headed in an Andrea Pirlo corner after half an hour.

Though Daniele Conti pulled one back with a free kick just after half-time, Inzaghi struck again with a solo goal 20 minutes from time to secure three points.
