Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu has been ruled out for up to 40 days following minor knee surgery.
Former Parma, Chelsea and Juventus forward Mutu was injured while on international duty with Romania last week.
A row subsequently broke out between club and country about his treatment.
Fiorentina, fifth in the domestic standings, are battling to reach the fourth Champions League qualifying spot with eight games left this season.
Romania lie fifth in World Cup qualifying Group 7, with four points from five games, six behind France in second.
Mutu should return in time for their next qualifying match, against Lithuania on June 6.
He will miss at least five Serie A matches - including the April 25 clash with Roma - although should return for the games against Sampdoria, Lecce and Milan.
