Mayor: City success is just reward

Tue 06 May, 05:45 PM

Elected Mayor Mark Meredith believes Stoke's promotion to the Premier League is a just reward for the fans' years of dedicated support.Tony Pulis' side confirmed their return to the top tier of English football for the first time since 1985 following the 0-0 draw against Leicester on the final day of the season - sparking joyous scenes and a premature pitch invasion.

But Mayor Meredith - who confirmed an open top bus victory parade will depart from Stanley Matthews Way at 5.35pm this evening, ending at the Britannia Stadium - believes promotion will prove to be a momentous achievement for both club and city.

"The city council feels it is the least we can do to facilitate the open top bus tour so that thousands of people can line the streets to cheer on the players and staff," Meredith told the club's official website.

"The fans have been absolutely fantastic. They have been through thick and thin over the years and this is the reward for such great support.

"Promotion not only enhances the image of the club but also that of the city, in the UK and all over the world."
