Old Rules Give Wales The Edge

Tue 06 May, 11:09 PM

South African rugby coach Peter de Villiers is worried that Wales may have an advantage in the upcoming Test series because it will be played under the old laws and not the Experiment Law Variations.

The Southern Hemisphere nations have been trialling the ELVs during the Super 14 but, for the winter Test series against Wales and Italy, they will have to revert back to the old laws as part of the tour agreement.

He told Die Volksblad: "It is going to be tough. Wales will certainly have an advantage on this tour."

Despite several injuries, including talismanic flanker Schalk Burger, De Villiers insists the Test series will be a good battle of two powerful sides.

He said: "Injuries happen. But we should remember Wales did not win the Six Nations as a result of individual brilliance but because they were such a good team."

"One will always have injured players and others who are not well. It may be difficult to replace some but that is the challenge. It has been said Schalk will be out for six weeks but lets see what happens."
